Oppong Nkrumah: NDC engages in ‘intellectual dishonesty’ in assessment of government’s achievements

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) led government has jabbed the Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over claims that the ruling NPP party has only achieved about 14% of its manifesto promises.

Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, addressing journalists in Accra on Monday, June 15, 2020, said  the claims by the NDC is a  distortion of facts “one that the leading opposition party is engaging in to serve their own parochial partisan interest”.

According to Mr Oppong Nkrumah, the opposition NDC party is parading dishonesty about the current state of affairs.

“As we get into the 2020 national conversation period, one of the narratives that the NDC seek to carve is a narrative of dishonesty and in order to give life or credence to that narrative, they have to create scenarios that if indeed we made 388 promises, they will find some ways of adding some 235 and claim that we made 631 and in the end say therefore that we have been dishonest”

Mr Nkrumah indicated that part of the strategy of the NDC is increasing the NPP’s promises from 388 to 631 to enable the opposition party make a claim of dishonesty against the Akufo-Addo administration.

“They make this argument because what they seek is to downplay our achievement as a country and as a people” he added.

In the third edition of their weekly press conference Monday, the NDC rated the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) 14 percent in their manifesto promises prior to the 2016 general elections. The press conference which was led by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described as woeful government’s accomplishment of its own promises.

However, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, who was responding to the claims, stated that “what they have always forgotten is that if Ghana succeeds, and the Government of Ghana, regardless of which administration is in power, gets the credit, it insures to the benefit of all Ghanaians including them. When Ghanaian leadership is respected and appreciated across the continent or the world, they too, regardless of their partisan political Colour benefit from the collateral credit.”

The Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, admonished that despite this year being an election year, the country should be focused on conversations that will help bring development.

“We are clear in our minds that this year being an election year, despite the expectation that our attention as a nation even on politics should be focused on leadership in times of crisis, it comes as no surprise that the group will resort to such attempts. We do not believe that Ghana’s progress record should be undermined in those attempts to be partisan. Government assures the people of Ghana to set and defend the nation’s record of growth straight even in this trying times” he added.

NDC: Akufo-Addo government has achieved only 14% of promises not 78%

0

The debate and arguments over the achievements between Ghana’s two main political parties, thus opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), seems not to come to an end because the NDC has sought to rubbish achievements of the ruling government.

The NDC has said the NPP’s initial 78% figure indicating it as the performance rate of the government is nothing but a blatant scam which is being sold to the ordinary Ghanaian.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Kumasi, Vice President Bawumia said the Akufo-Addo administration has accomplished and fulfilled 78% of its 2016 manifesto promises, up from the 72% earlier stated.

Vice President Bawumia is quoted to have said, “In all, we made 388 promises in our manifesto. The most recent validation exercise at the end of January 2019 shows that we had delivered or are delivering on 303, 78 percent of the promises, up from the 72 percent reported earlier.”

However, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa , the  MP for North Tongu , addressing the media at the weekly press briefing of the NDC on the theme; NPP 2016 manifesto in perspective: claims, deception and really, stressed that per the party’s research, the ruling government barely scored 20%.

The ruling government, per the NDC’s research, made 631 manifesto promises not 388 as earlier touted by Vice President Bawumia.

According to Okudzeto Ablakwa, the cumulative performance of the ruling govt in achieving its promises rather hovers around 14% not 78%.

Being specific with regards to the performance in specific ministries, the NDC ranked the chieftaincy and local government ministries zero.

The NDC party claimed that this means only 86 of the 631 promises have been delivered.  “Notwithstanding the difficult economy we inherited, we had to get on with it and start to fix the problems. We were cognisant of our many promises. In fact, at the direction of President Akufo-Addo, we put together a dashboard of manifesto promises immediately after we were declared winners of the 2016 election, and before we were sworn into office. We have been using this dashboard to track our manifesto promises since”, the Vice-President said at the time. “The challenge was huge. How could an economy that could not pay even teacher and nursing training allowances, suddenly deliver lower taxes, restore teacher and nursing training allowances, create jobs, implement free senior high school education, NABCo, Planting for Food and Jobs, One Village-One Dam, One Constituency-One Ambulance, reduce electricity prices, formalise the economy, industrialising the economy, reducing the cost of doing business, etc., while at the same time reducing the budget deficit and the rate of borrowing? It seemed an impossible task and our opponents were emphatic that we could not fulfill our promises. But we were very confident that with good economic management and by the grace of God, we could make what seemed impossible possible.

“The data and the evidence are clear that we have largely met our manifesto promises. We have delivered and are delivering on over 300 of our promises, and we are on course to do even more,” he declared.

Hearts of Oak legend Mohammed Polo blames poor technical direction for club’s woes

0

Hearts of Oak legend Mohammed Polo has blamed poor technical direction for the club’s current woes.

The man, known as the ‘Dribbling Magician’, has been a player and a coach for the Rainbow club.

Polo believes that poor handling of the club coupled with enviness has seen the stature of Hearts of Oak hit a low.

Polo, speaking to Max 89.7 FM, said the club will have to restructure to be able to get back to their glory days.

“There are so many issues but it is more about the technical direction, they change it too often. There is also a ‘pull him down’ attitude at the club and floating of shares. Hearts use to be a force in the olden days, we achieved so much in the past with Harry Zakour and the rest. So something is wrong, the structures in place now has changed and it is not helping at all, the last time I was there, I met a good structure at Auroras and developed several good players”

Hearts of Oak has not won a major trophy since 2009, something the fans are not happy about.

They came close to ending their trophy drought in 2017 but were beaten 3-1 in the FA Cup final against Kotoko.

Akesse Brempong: Ghanaians are not supportive

0

A Ghanaian Gospel musician, Akesse Brempong, has made an assertion that Ghanaians do  not support their art as compared to other African countries and their own arts.

Akesse Brempong made this revelation during an interview with an Accra-based FM station.

According to Akesse, he has done shows in Nigeria and South Africa and the support from the people was simply overwhelming.

“The thing about Nigerians is that they cherish their language. They would rather you sing a Nigerian song to them than coming to sing an English song so you have to find a way of connecting with them first. You have to give them what they’re familiar with before you delve into what they’re not familiar with”.

He said Nigerians are so in love with their own art, so much that to break through there, you have to do it with the help of a Nigerian artiste.

However, the musician concluded that this is not the same with Ghanaians because they do not have that much support for their own acts.
