Story by Samuella Mantebea Okantah

The government of Ghana has accepted the decision by Burkina Faso to dismiss its restriction on the issuance of special export authorisation for fresh tomatoes.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, authorities said that this decision will help steady tomato supply in Ghana.

The minister for trade, agribusiness, and industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and her Burkinabe counterparts had this talk on the sidelines of the WTO MC14 in Yaounde.

Their expectation of this decision is to promote the trading environment between these two neighbouring countries.

Regardless of the resumption of imports, the government expressed its commitment to improve domestic supply and reduce the reliance on external supply.

It noted that some programmes such as irrigation projects, and availability of suitable large-scale lands, were being boosted in order to ensure the sustainable supply of tomatoes locally.

Authorities urged traders and other stakeholders to aid these projects, emphasising that the main objective is to protect consumers while building a resilient local tomato industry neighboring countries.
