A chief of Adukrom quarters, Nana Atakora Asare, has stirred fresh controversy in religious circles after asserting that modern-day tithing lacks a biblical foundation.
This follows a viral video of a methodist church member calling a head pastor and the elders thieves during church service.
Speaking to Max FM’s Morning Dew on the topic of tithing, Nana Atakora Asare argued that the widely practised system of giving one-tenth of one’s income to the church is often misinterpreted and does not reflect the original intent of biblical teachings.
He maintained that tithing, as practised today, has been altered over time and is no longer consistent with scriptural principles.
“Modern tithing has no biblical basis,” he stated, calling on religious leaders to re-examine doctrine and ensure that teachings align with accurate interpretations of the Bible.
The remarks have triggered mixed reactions among clergy and congregants.
While some support his position, describing it as a necessary critique of long-standing practices, others strongly disagree, insisting that tithing remains an important act of faith, obedience, and support for church activities.
Several church leaders have defended the practice, arguing that tithing continues to play a vital role in sustaining ministries, funding community projects, and supporting the less privileged.
They also maintain that biblical references to tithing are still relevant in guiding Christian giving.
Observers say the comments by Nana Atakora Berimah have reignited ongoing debates about the interpretation of scripture and the role of financial contributions in religious worship. The discussion is expected to continue as both supporters and critics engage in deeper theological and public discourse.
The development underscores growing scrutiny over religious practices and the need for clarity in teachings that directly impact the livelihoods of believers.
