Highlife musician legend Nana Tuffour is dead

Ghanaians woke up to very sad news today  when Highlife legend Nana Tuffour was announced dead,according to reports he died at home.

According to news reports, the body of 66-year-old James Nana Tuffour has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Mortuary.

Nana Tuffour was born on February 14, 1954. He started his journey in music with keyboardist Alex Konadu. And joined the Wanto Wazuri Band later as a pianist, subsequently becoming the band’s frontman. He carved a great niche for himself as one of the musicians in Ghana with strong vocal abilities and unique lyrics.

Nana Tuffour later left for Nigeria with an aim of releasing his solo album. He worked as a keyboardist for King Sunny Ade, a famous Nigerian musician, during his stay in the West African country.

In 1979 Nana Tuffour’s first album named ‘Highlife Romance’ was released by him.

Having a number of awards to his credit, ‘9-9-2-4’ as the musician was affectionately called, had over 15 albums.

Some of his popular songs included ‘Abeiku’, ‘Me Yere Dada’, ‘Owuo Sei Fie’, ‘Adeepena’ and ‘Manu Me Ho’.

Nana Tuffour won hearts with his love songs, consoled the bereaved with dirges, encouraged the weak with his inspirational compositions, entertained many with his unapparelled masterpieces and treated patrons of his shows to eclectic performances.

There was an immense contribution to the Ghana music industry by him. And it is evident in the tributes poured out in his honour after news of his death went viral.

66-year-old James Nana Tuffour is said to have departed to eternity in the early hours of Monday, June 15 after a short illness.
