The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Liztino Centre, a facility that trains parents on how to care for autistic children, Elizabeth Acquah Bertino, has called on parents to focus on helping children with special needs to be independent.
The move, she said, would help the child to take care of him or herself when the parents were no longer living.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Max Novella Chat in Accra on Sunday, Bertino explained that bringing up a child with special needs to live on his or her own would help the parents for the child not to become a burden.
She maintained that children with special needs, when they are trained well, could work and build a life on their own.
Bertino noted that it was primitive to think children with special needs could not live an independent life and have no important role to play in life.
