GH¢11.8bn supplementary budget requested by Govt amid coronavirus threats

0

GH¢ 11. 8 billion supplementary budget has been requested by the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from Parliament to sponsor government’s expenditure for the rest of the year.

According to him, the tabled request is expected to help government finance various projects due to the revenue shortfalls and budget deficit created by the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ken Ofori-Atta, addressing Parliament on Thursday, said “this Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review and its programmes draws us closer to our collective aspirations.”

“Whiles this pandemic requires us to exceed the limits imposed by the FRA, Act, 982, we have had to make these major expenditures to protect lives and livelihoods of Ghanaians and sustain businesses. We therefore request a supplementary Budget of GH¢ 11,896,477,566.00 to enable us continue this extraordinary task,” the finance minister requested.

Ken Ofori-Atta further announced a reduction in the Communication Service Tax (CST) from 9 to 6 percent. According to him, he believes, it will aid workers working remotely.

“In the short term, we will reduce the CST from 9% to 5% to reduce the cost of communication services to the consumer as more and more people work remotely and utilize online services.”

“We will count on the Telcos to match this reduction in the CST by reducing their tariffs. This is important for our youth, entrepreneurs and the burgeoning FINTEC industry.”

There were other interventions announced, which included an unprecedented GH¢100 billion Ghana Cares Obaatanpa Programme to transform and modernize Ghana in three and a half years, establishment of a GH¢ 2 billion Guarantee Facility to support all sectors of business and job retention, establishment of an Unemployment Insurance Scheme and others.

Also a review in GDP projections from 6.8 percent to 0.9 percent was announced by the Finance Minister.

The toss of a coin paved my way to become Black Stars first choice keeper – Fatau Dauda

0

Ghana International, Fatau Duadu, has revealed that he had a major breakthrough at Ashanti Gold SC when he won a toss to play ahead of ex-goalkeeper George Owu.

Dauda, speaking on Max TV’s Black Stars Classics-World Cup Edition, said that opportunity helped him to make a breakthrough to become the first choice goalkeeper for Black Stars at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Before the bizarre toss, Dauda was out of the national team, having featured in the 2008 AFCON, but his performances for AshGold in the local league and the CAF Confederations Cup ensured he was recalled.

“Coach David Duncan was at AshantiGold during a time I was around with George Owu who was a senior goalkeeper. We had a midweek game against Hearts of Oak.

Owu was senior to me but coach Duncan, a day before the game called both of us to his room and tossed a coin to determine who keeps the post. First, toss Owu won, then I won the last two toss.

I was the first choice but we lost 1-0, but that did not put Coach Duncan off; and in our subsequent CAF game, I was retained. I did extremely well and that ensured I was recalled to the national team”

Dauda is a journeyman in football and has played for clubs like Orlando Pirates, Enyimba and is currently the captain of Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities.

Widely regarded as Ghana’s first official international football supporter, Abraham Boakye, popularly known as “One Man Supporter”, has sensationally confessed to attempting to sabotage gospel musician Grace Ashly in 2005.

Speaking exclusively on Max TV’s Black Stars Classics- World Cup edition, One Man Supporter said he and a group of football supporters, tried to slow down the influence and popularity of the gospel singer before the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

Narrating the story, the President of the united Ghana Supporters Club recalled that in 2006, Miss Ashly composed a cheer song for the Black Stars and was brought on board to join the official supporters group, however she ended up in alignment with a completely new supporters group formed by lawyer Sarfo Abebrese.

“When Grace first came on board with us, she then joined up with a different supporter group and did a song for them. We never liked the idea so we also got other gospel musicians to do counter songs, we tried all means to sabotage her at the time but right now all I can say is we are sorry”.

One man supporter said it was a complex scenario but added that there was some influence from former GFA General Secretary Kofi Nsiah.

“All this was down to the works of Kofi Nsiah, I blame him because he caused all this division for reasons best known to himself”.

Abraham Boakye is regarded as one of the most passionate supporters of the Black Stars and other national football teams and his stark confession comes at a time that football in Ghana is bracing up for a revival after Covid-19 restrictions and health protocols are lifted.

Isaac Dogboe ‘The Royal Storm’ beats Avalos in comeback fight

0

Isaac ‘The Royal Storm’ Dogboe, the former junior featherweight world champion, made a triumphant return to boxing after an eighth round technical knock-out to Mexican-American Chris Avalos.

On Tuesday night, it was a featherweight bout at the MG Grand in Las Vegas, USA.

Former WBO champion Isaac Dogboe has been out of boxing since losing his title reclaim bout to Mexican Emanuel Navarrete in May, 2019.

However, he showed that he had made amends after stopping Avalos in his tracks.

It was open exchanges in the first two rounds but the Ghanaian proved to be the sharper puncher afterwards, throwing consistent jabs at the Mexican-American.

However, the Royal Storm was deducted points in Round 5 by referee Russell Mora after he landed a low blow on Avalos.

Dogboe, unfazed by this, scaled up his punches, bruising the face of his opponent.

Avalos’s punch output dropped significantly with each round and with a few minutes to the end, he received a Dogboe left hook, dazing him.

Referee Mora, then, stopped the fight at 2:25.

Dogboe was for the first time without his father, Paul, who had not made the trip because of the border closures in Ghana.

Paul said in Accra that his son was “determined” to knock out his more experienced opponent.

“He can knock Chris Avalos out easily, if Avalos stands and fights with him toe-to-toe, I think Avalos will go but if Avalos uses his range then I think Avalos will beat him on point.”

In Dogboe’s corner on the night was Barry Hunter.

“I heard his voice and he told me to take my time,” said Dogboe after the bout.

“I set up everything with jabs.”

With the victory, Dogboe, 25, improves to 21-2, 15 knockouts
