Segbefia: Amidu’s Interpol red alert intended to embarrass Mahama

0

Alex Segbefia, a former Health Minister, has said red alert issued by the Interpol for Samuel Adam Fosters, also known as Samuel Adam Mahama, and three others over their role in the Airbus bribery scandal is intended to embarrass former President John Mahama.

In a statement, Mr Segbefia said it is worrying that even though Ghanaian authorities are aware of the residence of the persons being sort, the special prosecutor still went ahead to trigger the Interpol alert.

“What is unusual about this particular Red Notice is that Ghana Government knows where Samuel Mahama lives in the UK up to his exact residential address. One needs to bear in mind that all the hula-baloo about Airbus emanated from the UK courts, who have dealt with it and settled it. And yet even though he and the other persons named in the Red Notice are British Nationals, the UK government has not thought it fit to proffer any charges against them. He is not considered a flight risk so no restrictions have been imposed on him and he has not been asked to hand over his passport. Why would the UK Government, based on the same facts as are narrated in the Red Notice, arrest him for Ghana government? Besides, Ghana has an extradition treaty with the UK. It also has a Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement with the UK,” Mr Segbefia wrote.

He added: “The Special Prosecutor must be aware that it is forlorn hope that the UK government would extradite the three named persons. It is interesting how recently the scurrilous story found its way unto the front pages of the controversial Sun newspaper in the UK. Individuals behind that publication are suspected to be closely tied to the family of Akufo-Addo. This so-called arrest warrant is a red herring. It is an extension of their game plan to embarrass President John Mahama because of the impending elections”.

Below are details of the statement:

A Red Notice is usually issued against a criminal fugitive on the run who seeks actively to evade justice. It is a notice published by Interpol to law enforcement agents across the world requesting them to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending his extradition. When it is published, it is not Interpol seeking the location and arrest of the person, but rather the country that requests the publication. Procedurally, Interpol would publish a Red Notice at the request of a member country provided the request meets the constitutional requirements of Interpol.

A Red Notice is however, a voluntary system. A state is therefore not obliged to make an arrest based on its publication, and can decide to ignore it. This is because it is not an arrest warrant, and countries can themselves determine what weight to give such notice.

What is unusual about this particular Red Notice is that Ghana Government knows where Samuel Mahama lives in the UK up to his exact residential address. It also has a Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement with the UK.

Why publish Red Notice when the Ghana Government can formally ask for his extradition through regular channels?

The Special Prosecutor must be aware that it is forlorn hope that the UK government would extradite the three named persons.

My brother Baffour is everything to me, he is my second god – Asamoah Gyan

0

Ghanaian legend Asamoah Gyan has said that even though we all serve a living God his brother Baffour Gyan is a second god to him because everything he has now is because of his brother.

Describing the influence of his brother on his football career, the Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan, said “We all serve the living God but I will say, he is my second god because he has done everything for me”.

Asamoah Gyan, being the youngest player ever to score for Ghana, said his rise to greatness in football would not have been possible without the influence of his brother.

Baffour and Asamoah Gyan, who are brothers, played as attackers for the national team, however, it was the latter who had a great football career and became Ghana’s all-time top scorer with more than 50 goals, a record that makes him the 3rd African and 52nd player in the world to score more than 50 international goals.

used in describing the influence of his brother Baffour Gyan on his career. Asamoah Gyan likened his brother to a second god because he acted as a guardian angel, ensuring that he has a successful career devoid of mistake he, Baffour committed in the past.

Speaking on Black Stars Classics-World Cup Edition on Max TV, Asamoah Gyan said “We all serve the living God but I will say, he is my second god because he has done everything for me”.

“The mistakes he made in life, he made sure I didn’t go through them. He is like a guardian angel till now,” the former Sunderland player added

Asamoah, revealing the impact and influence of his brother on his football career, recalled that it was the advice of Baffour Gyan that succeeded in making him decide on schooling in Accra despite him having different plans.

Baby Jet said “He went to Adisadel College and I wanted to follow his footsteps when I completed JHS and I had to choose Adisadel College, so I chose all the Cape Coast schools”.

To his dismay, however, his brother advised him against his decision to stay in Accra in order to get scouted easily into the national team.

“Baffour said no. All my friends that were in Accra that I played with I saw them playing in the U-17 national team and I was at school,” Asamoah Gyan told host Yaw Ampofo Ankrah and Philip Sitsofe Atsrim.

Gyan, reminiscing what his elder brother had told him, added that my brother “should have been in that team at that time, so he advised me not to go that far, I should be in Accra, so that was how I chose Accra Academy. My grade was okay so they spoke to the headmaster and he said okay because obviously I was a football player. So, he was the one guiding me in all these things and it really worked.

While Gyan was in school he got spotted by Liberty Professionals where he worked hard to earn a call up to the national team at age 17, going ahead to have a successful career playing at two World Cup tournaments.

Chelsea clinch FA Cup final date with Arsenal after De Gea horror show

0

David de Gea had a day to forget as Olivier Giroud and Mason Mount helped Chelsea outlcass Manchester United 3-1 in the English FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

Giroud ensured Chelsea deservedly led with the help of a goalkeeping error from De Gea at the end of the first half.

The Frenchman grabbed his 16th goal in the competition since his debut in January 2013, scoring 13 for Arsenal and 3 for Chelsea which is only second to Sergio Aguero on 19 within that period.

United’s performance was at odds with their recent form and they saw Bailly taken away on a stretcher in a neck brace after a nasty clash of heads with Maguire.

Despite Maguire’s own goal, aunited got a consolation through Bruno Fernandes from a spot-kick after Callum Hudson-Odoi’s clumsy challenge on Anthony Martial.

The result means this is Chelsea’s first victory against Manchester United since the 2018 FA Cup final.

However, United’s focus turns back to the race for the top four in the Premier League as they host West Ham on Wednesday.

Chelsea will eventually prepare for Arsenal in a Wembley return set for 1st August but will confirm their own place in the Champions League spots by beating Liverpool on the final day.

2010 WC: Serbia’s Goalkeeper played mind games with me before the penalty – Asamoah Gyan

0

Legendary Ghana forward Asamoah Gyan has revealed that during the 2010 World Cup, the goal keeper of Serbia played mind games on him during their match.

Describing the tournament in South Africa a decade ago as the turnaround in his football career, Asamoah Gyan said the goal keeper of Serbia approached him and said if the ball is kicked to the right he would take it.

“With this penalty, the goal keeper was playing mind games with me, during the penalty he came to me and said if you play the ball on my right I will take it and that was where I put the ball, on his right,” Asamoah Gyan said.

He further went on to reveal that it is the norm in football games and that most of the time players play psychological mind games with them.

“It happens, sometimes they play mind games with you, the goal keepers especially. They will say if you put it on my left I will take it. You will be like eeii. May be in your mind you want to put it on his left so it will make you confused,” Gyan added.

Asamoah Gyan, revealing how he prepares himself before he takes a penalty kick, on Black Stars Classics on Max TV with host Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, said “It’s all about confidence and technique, I thank God I have got that technique and confidence, it’s all about confidence. Somebody can be a very good expert or a good penalty taker but when you don’t have the confidence when you go there you will mess it up.”

As the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana national team, with 51 goals. Gyan has represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. With 6 goals, he is the top African goalscorer in the history of the World Cup.

He has also represented Ghana at the 2004 summer Olympics and in seven African Cup of Nations in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019 helping them finish in third-place in 2008 and runner-up in 2010 and 2015.

Akufo-Addo: ‘Convince your friends and families to register for voter ID card’

0

Ghanaians who have already registered for the voter ID card have been urged by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to convince their friends and families to also register.

With over three million people already registered, the voter registration exercise started last Tuesday.

However, concerns have been raised about the ongoing voter registration exercise, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic still prevalent.

The Electoral Commission (EC), though, has assured that it will ensure all safety protocols are observed at the various centers.

In a post on Twitter ,the President shared a message urging Ghanaians to get involved in the registration exercise.

He also encouraged those who have already registered to convince their friends and families to also register for the voter ID card.

“If you have registered already there are two things you can do. Firstly, you can serve as a guarantor for up to 10 people who are eligible to register,” Akufo-Addo’s post read.

“Secondly, you can convince your friends and family to also register,” it added while calling on all Ghanaians to wear their masks and maintain social distancing when the go to the centers.”

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo is currently under a 14-day self-isolation after a person within his circles tested positive for COVID-19.

Bentil: Why are schools open when the Supreme Court, Finance Ministry are closed due to Coronavirus

0

Kofi Bentil, the Senior Vice President of policy think tank, Imani Africa, has said there should be the closure of schools following the occurrence of COVID-19 in them, wondering why the Supreme Court and the Ministry of Finance will close down due to the virus but allow schools to continue to operate.

The comments by Kofi Bentil comes after schools across the country have been opened for students in final year to write their final examinations. In senior high schools, second-year gold track students are also in school to finish up their semester. However, Mr Bentil wants them closed down as the students are infecting one another in the schools.

On the other hand, the Supreme Court and the Ministry of Finance have been closed down after recording some cases. The schools continue to operate even after recording cases on campus. According to Mr Bentil, he finds this development untenable and wants the schools closed.

Mr. Kofi Bentil has been consistent in calling for the closure of the schools on social media.

Some five senior high schools in the western region, meanwhile, have recorded COVID-19 cases, further heightening fears about an escalation in cases in the schools across the country.

EC: We’ll make up for lost time at registration centres

0

According to the Electoral Commission (EC), it will make up for time lost at some registration centres where registration delayed on Sunday 12 July 2020 because of activation or network problems.

Technical problems were experienced at some registration centres in Ghana as a result of bad network and, therefore, could not start on the stipulated time of 7 am as spelt out by the EC for the commencement of the registration exercise.

In a statement by the EC, signed by Mrs Sylvia Annor, Ag. Director Public Affairs indicated that “details of the extension for the affected registration centres will be communicated in due course.”

On Sunday, 12 July, the third phase of the voter registration exercise began and will end on 17 July 2020.

All stakeholders have been urged by the EC to cooperate with it to make the ongoing registration exercise a success.

Ablakwa: Double-track has encouraged truancy, we’ll abolish it

0

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a former Deputy Education Minister, has said the next government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not discard Free SHS but will rather bring an end to the Double Track System.

The Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party(NPP) government introduced the Free Senior High School(SHS) system to allow for Ghanaian children of Senior High School going age to have access to free education.

The government introduced the Double-track system in a bid to control the numbers and also to allow for quality Education provided at the Senior High School level. This also welcomed the semester system at the high school level.

However, speaking in a yet-to-be-aired interview with Fiifi Banson, Okudzeto Ablakwa who was a Deputy Education Minister under the John Dramani Mahama administration said the next NDC government will not cancel Free SHS as it’s been peddled by the NDC.

According to him, they will rather cancel the double track system because it impedes quality education.

“We will not cancel Free SHS. What we will cancel is double track. We think that it’s horrible, it’s leading to truancy, it’s affecting contact hours, the time on task is being affected so as for the double track system, our flagbearer has said it will be abolished.”
