Ghana Football GFA vs PALMER CASE IS A TOUGH CASE FOR CAS – Amanda Clinton

0

A legal practitioner and candidate in the 2019 Ghana FA Presidential elections, has cautioned that even though it was initially thought to be unlikely, a re-election ruling is not entirely out of the question.

This scenario might be a shocking reality when the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) brings what is expected to be their final verdict on the case between the Ghana FA and Mr Wilfred Osei Palmer.

The Swiss based tribunal was expected to announce the outcome of what has been a prolonged challenge, having rescheduled the date of their ultimate decision from July 17 to August 4.

However, the ruling has once again been rescheduled to September 1, 2020 by the Court of Arbitration for Sports(CAS).

According to Miss Clinton, the Swiss-based court may not have confirmed its final verdict due to a back log of cases that have not been dealt. It could also be due to complex considerations presented to them and that a re-election ruling is not to be dismissed so easily.

Speaking to Yaw Ampofo Ankrah on the first edition of Sports Drive on Accra-based Max 89.7 FM, Miss Clinton was blunt.  “It’s a very interesting case because ultimately, Palmer is essentially trying to say that other candidates had gone before the GFA Ethics Committee on issues such as professional match fixing, bribery, age changing, non-payment of fees allegations etc. In addition, we have some candidates mentioned in the Dzamefe Commission Report.”

Using both legal and ethical references, “A lot of us remember the Dzamefe Commission Report. It should have been made available to the vetting committee. And so how come just one candidate was excluded. My objective assessment is that they could have excluded all of them, which is at least 3 or 4 candidates or included all of them, failing which, they may have to hold a re-election. Which may happen,” She added.

The lawyer did however say that GFA President Kurt Okraku has carried out his duties to the best of his capabilities considering the distractions.

Breaking News: Ruling on GFA-Palmer case postponed by CAS

0

The case involving the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Wilfred Osei Kwaku Palmer has been adjourned again by CAS.

The ruling has been rescheduled to September 1, 2020 by the Court of Arbitration for Sports(CAS).

A CAS statement issued on Wednesday August 5 read, “On behalf of the Deputy President of the CAS Arbitration Division, please be advised that the time limit to communicate the Arbitral Award to the parties, pursuant to Article 59 of the Code of Sports-related Arbitration, has been extended until September 1, 2020.”

This is the second time the verdict on the GFA-Palmer case has been postponed after an initial postponment on July 17, 2020.

Wilfred Osei Palmer is seeking redress from CAS after he was disqualified from competing in the GFA’s elections last year.

Osei Palmer is seeking for four reliefs, one of which could nullify GFA’s elections last year.

There were Earlier reports from certain quarters that interested parties involved in the case had been served with copies of the ruling but Mr. Osei Palmer came out to deny it.

In a statement by the Tema Youth chief, he indicated that he was waiting for CAF to announce the verdict.

“Contrary to report suggesting our lawyers received the much-anticipated ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), we wish to establish the fact that our lawyers are yet to receive the ruling from CAS,” a statement read.

“CAS has not given any reason for the delay, but we are hopeful that in due course the ruling will be sent to both parties involved.”

The Football Association was dragged to CAS by the Tema Youth bankroller Wilfred Osei Palmer over what he deemed unfair disqualification from contesting the 2019 GFA presidential election which Kurt Okraku won.

GFA boss Kurt Okraku: I am indifferent to impending CAS verdict

0

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt E.S. Okraku, has indicated that he is indifferent to the pending verdict of the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) which concerns the case presented by Wilfred Osei Palmer.

The Football Association was dragged to CAS by the Tema Youth bankroller Wilfred Osei Palmer over what he deemed unfair disqualification from contesting the 2019 GFA presidential election which Kurt Okraku won.

The verdict by CAS was scheduled to be announced on July 17 however, CAS pushed the date to August 4.

Kurt Okraku, ahead of the pronouncement of the verdict, said he is not bothered about it but rather focused on how soon football will resume.

Speaking to Waanuwaanu on Sports Pack 2 on Accra-based Max 89.7 FM, the GFA boss said “I am not bothered about CAS’ verdict concerning the case presented by Palmer, I am rather focused on how soon football will be resumed. So I am not concerned about the case at all.”

“As today marks another milestone in SWAG, I am glad about the euphoria around it and I am even glad about the step taken by him [Wilfred Osei Palmer]. He saw a problem and he took to it to a higher body to seek for redress, I see that as his right,” he added.

“So we leave things as it is since CAS stated they will issue their verdict tomorrow. So we are all waiting for tomorrow. We just have to be patient and in the end, football will be the ultimate winner”.

“It is true that the verdict is first presented to the parties first but for now I cannot share any information with the effect,” he added.

“I will not comment on whatever Palmer has posted on twitter concerning the case. If CAS has given its verdict, I don’t think I have to go ahead of them to say anything.

“What my focus is on is the repositioning of Ghana football and we all know how difficult things have been. We will need a lot of effort to bring back the love so I think we shouldn’t be overly focused on one case, there are a lot of issues to focus on.

“So whatever the decision of CAS will be, football must continue to develop in the country.”

Suspense as journalists besiege residence of Wilfred Osei Palmer awaiting CAS “verdict”

0

Dozens of Ghanaian journalists have laid siege at the Tema home of football administrator Wilfred Osei Palmer awaiting his official reaction to the verdict of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in his case against the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

However, as at 20:15 GMT (8:15pm local time), the vedict from CAS had not been made public. This situation has further heightened tension and uncertainty over the outcome of the Palmer’s legal action.

The club owner and business magnate is basically seeking a re-run of the 2019 GFA Presidential elections and a clean slate of eligibility for him to contest the seat.

For a man many pundits believed was finished in Ghana football, Mr Palmer has shown remarkable grit, focus and determination to remain relevant and instrumental in the affairs of the game.

Interestingly, the President of the GFA Kurt Okraku, has remained calm and focused in the execution of his duties since the impasse.

Mr Okraku, speaking on Accra based media netoworks Max FM and Max TV said he is ready to accept the CAS ruling and has no issues with the appellant.

Meanwhile in what is seen as a spicy talking point, the brother of the FA President, Derrick Okraku, has cast doubts on the chances of a Palmer victory.

“For me, it is a pretty straight forward one and I will be shocked to see things go the other way round not because I may be close to the FA but from what I have read, I will be surprised to see the verdict come in favour of the appellant,”

A confident Derrick Okraku further added that Ghana football is going through a necessary learning curve;

“It will be a learning point for me to know what interpretation was applied differently from what I expected, but in the courts, things can happen.”

Palmer was disqualified by the Ghana Football Normalization Committee on “integrity” issues.

In related news, one of GFA Presidential candidates Nana Yaw Amponsah is expected to be unveiled as the new CEO of Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Another candidate, Amanda Clinton is scheduled be on Max Fm and Max TV at 3pm on Wednesday 5th August for what will surely be a revealing interview with host Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

GFA President clarifies miscommunication on Macron sponsorship deal

0

Kurt E.S. Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has revealed that there was an error by the association in communicating news of the Macron deal.

The GFA, earlier last month, announced to the country that they had entered into an agreement with Macron, a kit manufacturing company, to become Ghana football’s official match ball sponsor.

In announcing the deal, the GFA tweeted and later published same on their website; “GFA enters partnership with Macron as Official Match Ball sponsor.”

However, both tweet and article were subsequently deleted.

The communication created the impression that the agreement was between the GFA and Macron, an Italian sporting apparel company.

But, thorough checks later on revealed that the three-year deal worth GH¢1.6m was signed with Koreen-Galaka Enterprise, a local dealer and not the Italian company.

This revelation prompted the GFA to delete their earlier tweet and rewrite the story on their website.

Kurt Okraku, in an interview with Waanuwaanu on Accra-based Max 89.7 FM, said “The product to be supplied by the football dealer or the dealer are Macron products.”

“I am sure in the communications that we said Macron but that doesn’t negate the good work that has been done that we have an official match ball supplier and Macron will be the brand (balls) that will be played across the country in the new season, he admitted.

“For me, the positives outweigh how somebody wants to interpret it,” He added.

The dealers, Korean-Galaka Enterprise and Procol Links, the FA signed the agreement with will supply the Ghana FA 5,000 balls and 1,500 pieces of bibs every season for the Ghana Premier League(GPL), MTN FA Cup and the National Division One League.

SHASHA MARLEY DEBUTS NEW SINGLE “THA DAWN” ON MAX89.7FM’S REGGAE CAFE

0

Sasha Marley, arguably one of Ghana’s biggest evergreen reggae acts, has just dropped his latest single, “THA DAWN,” in its first ever airplay on Max 89.7FM’s freshly minted REGGAE CAFE, when he was hosted by Heavy D as the first guest on the show.

Shasha, who has been away from the Ghanaian music scene for a while, said the song is a single on the “Called to Duty” album, an international collaboration with top reggae artistes from 11 countries, in appreciation of the Frontline Workers working through the COVID-19 pandemic in Hawaii. Shasha is the only African musician featured on the album.

He paid tribute to his wife and two daughters, who, he says, have inspired his return to his roots. He is currently in the studio putting together a new album which, Shasha believes, will be a boon for reggae lovers everywhere.

Speaking on REGGAE CAFE in his first radio interview for almost a decade, Shasha Marley, in response to Heavy D’s question on how he has managed to maintain the quality of his voice after four decades, attributed it to the fact that he has stayed away from cold drinks of any kind (including cold water) for over 40 years.

Sasha Marley has been churning out roots reggae vibes since the late 1970’s through to the early ’80s, when he was the lead vocalist of Matthew Chapter 5, a student’s band of St. John’s School, Sekondi, plausibly the most popular and versatile school band ever in Ghana. Shasha, even then, had a unique distinctive voice which belied his youth, especially whenever Matthew Chapter 5 did covers of Culture’s songs, with Shasha’s near perfect Joseph Hill “voice-print” driving the vibes.

Reminiscing on his school days at West Ridge Primary School, Old Hospital Middle School and St. John’s secondary, all schools in Sekondi which he mentions in “Twin City Mafia,” Shasha intimated that
he misses the good old days in Sekondi Takoradi.

Shasha has two albums to his credit, “SEEK YE GOOD, NOT EVIL,” and “LOST AND FOUND.”  He’s also featured on numerous local and international collaborations, with live gigs on big stages, with some of the biggest names on the global reggae circuit.

REGGAE CAFE, anchored by Heavy Diddly D, is live on Max89.7FM, every Saturday, from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. Stay tuned for Nana Fynn as he takes his turn on the show same time, on 8th August.
