Sasha Marley, arguably one of Ghana’s biggest evergreen reggae acts, has just dropped his latest single, “THA DAWN,” in its first ever airplay on Max 89.7FM’s freshly minted REGGAE CAFE, when he was hosted by Heavy D as the first guest on the show.

Shasha, who has been away from the Ghanaian music scene for a while, said the song is a single on the “Called to Duty” album, an international collaboration with top reggae artistes from 11 countries, in appreciation of the Frontline Workers working through the COVID-19 pandemic in Hawaii. Shasha is the only African musician featured on the album.

He paid tribute to his wife and two daughters, who, he says, have inspired his return to his roots. He is currently in the studio putting together a new album which, Shasha believes, will be a boon for reggae lovers everywhere.

Speaking on REGGAE CAFE in his first radio interview for almost a decade, Shasha Marley, in response to Heavy D’s question on how he has managed to maintain the quality of his voice after four decades, attributed it to the fact that he has stayed away from cold drinks of any kind (including cold water) for over 40 years.

Sasha Marley has been churning out roots reggae vibes since the late 1970’s through to the early ’80s, when he was the lead vocalist of Matthew Chapter 5, a student’s band of St. John’s School, Sekondi, plausibly the most popular and versatile school band ever in Ghana. Shasha, even then, had a unique distinctive voice which belied his youth, especially whenever Matthew Chapter 5 did covers of Culture’s songs, with Shasha’s near perfect Joseph Hill “voice-print” driving the vibes.

Reminiscing on his school days at West Ridge Primary School, Old Hospital Middle School and St. John’s secondary, all schools in Sekondi which he mentions in “Twin City Mafia,” Shasha intimated that
he misses the good old days in Sekondi Takoradi.

Shasha has two albums to his credit, “SEEK YE GOOD, NOT EVIL,” and “LOST AND FOUND.”  He’s also featured on numerous local and international collaborations, with live gigs on big stages, with some of the biggest names on the global reggae circuit.

REGGAE CAFE, anchored by Heavy Diddly D, is live on Max89.7FM, every Saturday, from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. Stay tuned for Nana Fynn as he takes his turn on the show same time, on 8th August.
