President Akufo-Addo: ‘We continue to wage war against illegal mining’

0

President Nana Akufo-Addo has stated that his government remains committed to the fight against illegal mining in Ghana.

President Akufo-Addo made the comment during a sod cutting event for the construction of the Yendi Water Supply Project, in fulfillment of a pledge he made to Yaa-Na Mahama Abukari II at the 2019 Damba Festival.

“We continue to wage war against, and intensify our resolve to curb the activities of illegal miners (galamseyers), sand winning and farming along the banks of our water bodies, which lead to their pollution,” President Akufo-Addo said.

The Water Supply Project, being financed by a $30 million facility from the India Exim Bank, is aimed at providing the people of the Yendi Municipality and its environs with fifteen thousand (15,000) cubic metres of water daily to meet the water demand from now till the year 2040.

Cutting the sod for the construction on Wednesday, 29th July, 2020, President Akufo-Addo indicated that communities earmarked to benefit from the Project, upon completion, include Yendi, Ghani (Ngani), Sambu, Adobo, Sokoli, Nakpachei, Gbungbalaga and Kuga.

President Akufo-Addo stated that it has been fifty-nine (59) years since the construction of the original Yendi Water Supply System, which took its raw water source from the River Daka.

“Since its construction, it has not undergone any rehabilitation works, and it is no longer capable of satisfying the water needs of Yendi and its environs. Additionally, because of the considerable increase in population and economic growth, it has become necessary to construct a new water supply system to meet the water demands of Yendi and its adjoining towns and communities,” he added.

The President continued, “Yaa-Na Mahama Abukari II, when I told you that ‘great days lie ahead of Dagbon’, this is what I meant, as this Project signals the beginning of infrastructural development for Yendi. And, as you know by now, when Akufo-Addo makes a promise, he keeps it.”

President Akufo-Addo assured residents of Yendi, and, indeed, all Ghanaians, that Government’s commitment to protecting the country’s water-bodies, that serve as the sources for the provision of potable drinking water for the Ghanaian people, is unwavering.

Thanking the Indian Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, through the Indian Exim Bank, for making available the financing for the Yendi Water Supply Project, whose impact, upon completion, will be immense for the people of Yendi and its surrounding towns, he said it is a “good testimony of the strong bonds of co-operation and collaboration that exist between our two countries. Long may it continue.”

He urged the contractor, Messrs. WAPCOS Ltd of India, to complete this project on schedule, and help deliver potable water to the beneficiary towns and communities.

The President thanked the Yaa-Na “for the gracious gesture and honour of conferring the chieftaincy title, Dagbon Malti Naa Abudani I, on me, and I promise you that I will do my best to live up to the title.”

Muntaka: Compiling new voters register biggest mistake by Akufo-Addo gov’t

0

Member of Parliament for Asawase, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka has described the compilation of a new voters register by Electoral Commission as the biggest mistake made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The minority member, Muntaka, in an exclusive interview, disclosed that the NPP led-government and the Electoral Commission could have been proactive in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic if they had saved monies meant for the voter registration to cater for the lives of citizens.

Muntaka added that the EC’s exercise showed government’s negligence in managing the finances of the country.

“The sad thing about coronavirus is that the consequences of it do not manifest immediately, they manifest later. This was the biggest mistake that this government and the EC have made but they will not admit to it,” Muntaka Mubarak said.

Despite claims by government backed by the Electoral Commission that the previous voter register was bloated, the Asawase MP sighted with examples that the newly compiled one was still bloated.

“Now they targeted to do 15 million and they’ve gone past 15 million is it bloated? In Asawase our old register was about 102,000 and as at yesterday we had done almost 101,000 and they have a mop-up for Saturday and Sunday,” Muntaka said.

“I will be very surprised if we don’t surpass the old number. So then I ask what they have really done,” he added.

With regards to ghost names in the voter register, the NDC loyalist said, “At least I know five people who registered and they are already dead and by the time it’s election, only God knows the number of people who will die. You don’t do things with your emotions, it was about ego, arrogance.”

“When coronavirus came, we needed to preserve every cedi but in my view, it’s just like you open a tap and brought a basket to fetch the water and now billions have just gone down the drain. So many people have been hurt from the violence which we saw and I believe we’ve not learnt anything from it,” he added.

Government spent over GHC 350 million in the compilation of a new voters register which has so far seen over 16 million citizens registered onto the list.

Domelevo : Nobody remains a boss forever

0

Daniel Domelevo, the Auditor-General, has offered a tacit advice on leadership, urging people in positions of authority to treat their peers and subordinates with respect.

A photo shared on the Facebook timeline of Daniel Domelevo, although it makes no reference to anyone in particular, has been interpreted by some as directed at some persons in authority under the current administration.

Mr Domelevo’s Facebook post comes with a photo of an old, decrepit and abandoned truck with a quote that opens with, “Life is a journey from birth to death.”

However, the accompanying text goes on further thus: “Your career is equally a journey from appointment to retirement. Therefore, prepare for life after retirement. Be good to your juniors, students, clients/customers and employees because you will not be the boss forever. Regardless of how everyone fears you at the place of work, one day you are going to end up like this lorry, tired, retired and abandoned. And if you were cruel, your pain will be worse.”

Mr Domelevo, renowned for his anti-corruption stance, has been forced to go on a 167 accumulated annual leave by the President, a move that has generated controversy.

The Auditor-General before his forced leave initiated a process to surcharge the Senior Minister, Yaw Asafo-Maafo, and other government officials for a $1 million dollar deal.

The Auditor-General wanted evidence from the Mr Osafo-Maafo of actual work done by private firm Kroll and Associates.

That matter is currently in court after the Senior Minister also initiated a process at the High Court to clear his name.

The forced leave directive handed to Mr Domelevo has been criticised by hundreds of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) as an affront to democracy and the fight against corruption.

Mr Domelevo was also recently locked out of his office after locks to the door was changed. Mr Domelevo said he had come to the office from his ongoing leave to pick up some documents.

One of the over 20 people who have shared Mr Domelevo’s post on the advice to persons in leadership notes, “From the man Mr Akufo-Addo sent home for fighting corruption. Auditor General!”

EC: Old voters ID cards still valid for business transactions

0

According to reports, the old voters’ identity card is still valid for identification related to socio-economic transactions until the Electoral Commission (EC) finishes the compilation of the new voters’ register.

Deputy Chairman in Charge of Operations at the EC, Mr Samuel Tettey, in an interview, said the Commission usually shared data with the relevant institutions, including banks, to enable them to verify the authenticity of the cards presented to them as part of their transactions.

Mr Tettey said the Voter’s ID card by the EC also served as an identification card to support financial transactions and filling different application forms.

“As our major stakeholders, the Commission will communicate accordingly when the process is done and when the new card becomes operational,” he said.

“As soon as we are done with the ongoing registration and the register is compiled and legitimised by the Court, the old card becomes invalid.” But until then, Mr Tettey explained that applicants who had successfully registered and received their cards could only use them to vouch for prospective applicants they knew as Ghanaians.

Earlier reports gathered that some individuals had been presenting their new Voters’ ID cards to institutions to transact business and became frustrated when they were told they could not be accepted now.

An official at a bank located in the Ministries area, who pleaded on anonymity, said that some clients had been presenting their new card as proof of their identity but the bank did not have the data base yet to validate their authenticity.

He, therefore, advised clients to present other identifications cards which could be authenticated.
