Govt: “Western Togoland’ situation is under control

Reverend Johnson Avuletey, the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, has said the Regional Security Council is taking measures to deal with the Western Togoland crisis.

The Deputy Volta Regional Minister’s comments comes after activists of the Western Togoland Secessionist group in the Volta Region blocked major entry points into the Region as part of measures to push the government to give them their sovereignty.

The Western Togoland group particularly blocked roads in Sogakope and Mepe, disrupting the activities of residents and motorists who ply that route.

The group also attacked a police station and made away with weapons from their armory.

Reacting to the attack on an Accra-based FM station, Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Reverend Johnson Avuletey, said the Regional Security Council is currently meeting to find a solution to the situation once and for all.

However, he assured the general public that the REGSEC had the situation under control and that there is no cause or alarm.

“The issue has to do with the so called Western Togoland Secessionist group who have blocked the roads rendering passenger incapable of moving to and fro but I want to assure you that everything is under control.

“The Regional Security Council is meeting seriously and some military men have been deployed. This is a national security issue and it will be dealt as such,” he said.

Atinka News’ Volta Regional Reporter, Christopher Pappoe, also reported that that the residents in Aveyime are currently living in fear over the attack.

He said the group blocked the roads in Aveyime since it is a strategic point that leads to a lot of towns in the region.

Twenty-nine (29) persons have been arrested by a joint security force deployed to the Juapong township where ‘Western Togoland’ secessionists were reported to have besieged early Friday.

The 29 arrested ‘Western Togoland’ persons have been airlifted to Accra for interrogation.

The group is believed to have links to the ‘Western Togoland’ secessionist group alleged to have seized several towns in the Volta region, mounted road blocks and burnt tyres.

According to eye witness reports in Juapong on Friday , one person was killed during a clash with security operatives Friday morning.

The ‘Western Togoland’ group alleged to be separatists, championing a secession agenda blocked entry points into to Volta Region, causing more than five hours of gridlock along the Adomi -Juapong – Akosombo stretch.

The group is fighting for the independence of ‘Western Togoland’, a part of Ghana which includes the entire of Volta region.

They are reported to have burnt car tyres and forcibly removed commuters from vehicles that were locked up due to the confrontations.

However, a joint security deployment of police and military personnel from Accra and Ho moved in to deal with the situation.

One person was shot dead during the fracas between security operatives and some town folk.

Bright Aryetey, Youth president for the Juapong community, said the residents should not be made to pay for the sins of the Homeland Study Group.

He condemned the actions of the group while stressing the need for thorough probe into the matter.

Meanwhile family of the deceased, 26-year-old Emmanuel Kale says the security personnel must explain why they killed their kinsman.

National House of Chiefs: We disapprove of Western Togolanders’ activities

The National House of Chiefs has condemned the activities of the Western Togolanders who blocked entry and exit roads into and out of the Volta Region on Friday dawn.

Three police officers were held hostage by the secessionist group during a fire exchange that led to the injury of three militants with one death.

Twenty-nine of the secessionists have been arrested.

Speaking on the matter on Friday evening , the President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV, said: “The Standing Committee will issue an appropriate response after this meeting to the happenings in the Volta Region, which we disapprove of and this is not something that any of us must condone”.

“It’s something that we should all support the government to ensure that it is nipped in the bud so we can continue in peace as a nation”, he said.

Meanwhile, security analyst Adib Saani has called on the National Security Minister, Mr Albert Kan Dapaah, to resign over his failure to heed early warnings concerning the activities of the secessionist group.

Describing the actions of the group as “more audacious, brazen”, Mr Sanni indicated that such actions are bound to recur because the secessionists have become more determined to “make strong political statements and control the narrative.”

Addressing the issue on his Facebook timeline on Friday, 25 September 2020, Mr Saani intimated: “National Security Minister must resign for failure to heed warning signs”.

He noted: “We ignored the early warning signs and thought this was all a joke”.

“We arrest and release, re-arrest and release again”.

“Despite the presence of intelligence officers, they have largely failed to gather actionable intel in real-time,” he added.

Mr Sanni, who is also the Executive Director of the Jatikay Centre for Human Security and Peace-Building, also said, “They seem to be succeeding into bullying government into submission.

“They have succeeded in disrupting lives and holding the nation hostage.

“Soon, we might go beyond condemning their actions to asking them what their demands are,” he added.

He further predicted that the secessionists “might start targeting critical infrastructure,” adding that infrastructure such as the over 100-kilometre Accra – Atimpoku – Juapong stretch, Adome bridge and the Akosombo dam are “high-value targets” that we cannot trade-off.

According to John Mahama , the youth need jobs and has, therefore, promised to create more than one million jobs if elected President again in the December 7 polls.

Speaking on an Accra-based TV station , the former President said: “My central message to Ghanaians is that we need jobs jobs jobs. The central plank of my second coming as President is to deliver jobs to our young people.

“If we don’t do this urgently, we have a time bomb ticking away and so everything, every policy, every sector is going to be focused on creating jobs for young people”.

“And, so, I’m coming out with the 1 million jobs plan”.

“We’ll create more than 1 million jobs, some in the public sector, some in the private sector, and it’s a very well thought out plan”.

This is not the first time Mr Mahama has promised to create one million jobs if elected.

On Monday, 27 July 2020 in Accra, outdooring his running mate Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang the NDC flagbearer said: “Our plans include an aggressive job and entrepreneurial programme in the public and private sector that will deliver a minimum 250,000 jobs every year”.

“A total of 1,000,000 jobs across the country by the end of my term in office in 2024″.

Dr. Bawumia to chiefs: We recognise your crucial role in governance

On Tuesday, 22 September 2020, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, inaugurated the newly-created Oti Regional House of Chiefs, as well as the reconstituted Northern Regional House of Chiefs in Dambai and Tamale, respectively.

According to Dr Bawumia, the creation of six new regions, has re-demarcated the administrative boundaries of the country, hence the need for the creation and reconstitution of regional houses of chiefs for affected boundaries.

At the two events, Dr Bawumia recalled the crucial roles chiefs played in the liberation of the country.

“Our traditional authorities continue to contribute immensely to the success of our modern-day democracy,” he said.

Dr Bawumia noted that the government of President Akufo-Addo recognises the indispensable role of chiefs in the country’s governance structure, and has, thus, increased various support for the chieftaincy institution, including 100% increase in monthly allowance, the GHS3.5 million support for the construction of the National House of Chiefs Secretariat as well as the institution of capacity building programmes, among others.

EC: No case of coronavirus recorded during voters registration exercise

0

The Electoral Commission (EC) has said that none of the 17 million voters captured in the just ended voters’ registration exercise and the 45,000 registration officers, have reported of contracting COVID-19 during the nationwide exercise.

According to Deputy Chairman of the EC in-charge of Corporate Services, Dr Bossman Eric Asare, at the end of the voters’ registration exercise, the Commission’s checks with the relevant state authorities such as the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the National COVID-19 Task Force, revealed that no single person had been reported of having contracted COVID-19 during the process of registering as a voter.

Dr Bossman Asare said this on Tuesday in Accra, during a virtual panel discussion on day one of the STAR-Ghana Foundation’s two-day virtual learning event to mark the end of the first phase of its Elections 2020 Call programme.

He noted that ahead of the registration exercise, the EC put in measures to contain the spread of the virus.

“As a result of that, as a Commission, we had an engagement with the GHS. We also met the National COVID-19 Task Force, and they explained certain things to us. They told us the things we needed to do to be able to ensure that we don’t get to the point where the people may end up contracting COVID-19.

“Consequently, the EC put all the necessary scientific measures in place at all our registration centres. At the end of the exercise on August 8th and 9th; and even till now, nothing has come to the attention of the EC, that the registration exercise led to people contracting COVID-19,” Dr. Asare said.

He said the Commission remained committed to helping contain the spread of the virus ahead of the December polls and called for the support of all. Dr. Asare said in 2016, the threshold for each polling station was 850 voters – no polling station exceeded 850 (voters) in 2016; stating that “but because of the pandemic in 2020, the Commission is saying that the maximum number of voters per registration centre will be 700”.

“… with this registration we undertook, any registration centre that has more than 700 people, we are going to split them into “A” and “B”.”

He said in the Commission’s estimation, such centres were about 6,000, “So, all the 6,000 centres that have registered more than 700 people, we are going to split them into “A” and “B” to reduce the queues at the polling stations.

“Depending on the alphabetical order of your name, you will either be in polling station “A” or polling station “B”.”

Alhaji Ibrahim-Tanko Amidu, Chief Executive Officer, STAR-Ghana Foundation, said the Foundation had committed $250,000 for phase two of its Elections 2020 Call programme.
