Asiedu Nketia: NDC will protect the vulnerable in society

0

Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said the next NDC government has a special package for the vulnerable in society, including orphans, widows and the aged.

According to Mr Asiedu Nketia, when elected into office in the December 7 elections, the NDC administration will establish special homes for the aged who are in need and give all persons above 60 years free health care.

Mr Asiedu Nketia further said widows will be protected through a legal instrument to ensure that they benefit from their deceased husband’s properties as well as protect them from harassment or intimidation. He explained that the new law when passed will complement Intestate Succession Law 1985, PNDC Law 111.

He made this known when he addressed a mini durbar of Chiefs, elders and cashew farmers at Baano no.2 in the Jaman South constituency as part of the Bono Regional campaign tour of NDC presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday.

The NDC’s General Secretary was concerned about the inadequacy of legal protection for domestic workers, noting that some people take advantage of the situation to cheat and unfairly treat their domestic employees.

He said the next NDC government will therefore address the situation by passing a law to protect domestic workers.

Government: No ‘jama’ at match venues when Football return

0

The Ghana Football Association(GFA) and the National Sports Authority (NSA) have been asked to institute the agreed safety measures before football resumes on the scheduled date.

The Director of Health Promotions at the Ghana Health Service, Dr Dacosta Aboagye, has tasked the two institutions to put in place the safety measures which were proposed by the government as conditions for the return of the Football game.

Dr Dacosta Aboagye told them not to wait until the day of the matches before they put in place those measures.

Among the safety protocols are the ban on singing and shouting at the stadiums.

According to Dr Aboagye, that ‘jama’ which has become an integral part of Ghana football will not be allowed at game venues.

Fans and officials will also have to wear nose masks and practise social distancing at the stadium.

“The Sports Authority and the Ministry must make sure that the 25% capacity and social distancing protocols are adhered to. They must provide hand-washing facilities and ensure that all the protocols are respected. They shouldn’t wait till it’s time for the games before they do these things. Just like we did at the airport, they should also do these things. We don’t want it to become a source of infection”.

“Everyone entering a stadium will have to wear face masks and wash his or hands. You’ll not sit by a friend and songs and noise will not be allowed. These are the guidelines that we have come up with. You can’t sing and shout at the stadiums”, he said.

The GFA, meanwhile, has announced the weekend of November 13 to 15 as the returning date for Ghana Football.

The FA in a release said that it is confident the new season will be one of the best in the history of Ghana football and football will not be breeding ground for Covid-19.

Clubs are expected to resume training today with players of Kumasi Asante Kotoko set to undergo coronavirus test today.

Coach Asare to Duke Micah: Come back stronger like Azumah

0

Coach Kwasi Ofosu Asare, the head coach of Ghana’s national boxing team, has described Duke Micah’s failed title bid as a big disappointment to the sport.

According to Coach Asare, the boxing fraternity was expecting Micah to bring the title home and that the defeat, is a big blow to the sport.

The defeat of Micah, however, should serve as a lesson to boxers, promoters and coaches in the country.

“It’s a big blow to Ghana boxing but we have to take it as a lesson. I want us to focus on the lessons from this bout. We have good boxers around who are going to challenge for titles soon. We have the likes of Plange, Dogboe who will be fighting soon so let’s focus on the lessons.

“Being a world champion takes time and I believe that very soon we will have word titles again”.

Duke Micah also received the backing of respected boxing coach to recover from the defeat and win a world title.

Coach Kwasi Ofosu Asare urged him to learn from the story of the great Azumah and pick up the pieces and re-launch another shot at the title.

“It has happened already so he shouldn’t focus on that. Even the greatest African boxer had to go through a defeat before winning titles so he shouldn’t give up. Azumah lost to Sanchez but he learnt his lessons to become the greatest boxer in Africa”.

Micah was handed a round three knock out by Casimero who defended his title.

Coach Asare holds that Micah’s defeat is because he was not fully prepared for the bout.

“We all expected victory but couldn’t get that. When I watched the fight, I felt that Micah was not himself. You could see that the confidence wasn’t there so I think the preparation was poor”.

Dr Bawumia: Coronavirus has jump-started our ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ mission

0

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, has indicated the coronavirus pandemic afforded an opportunity to establish policies intended to encourage the expansion of domestic industries and reduce imports.

According to Dr Bawumia, the domestic production of personal protective equipment (PPEs) has jump-started Ghana Beyond Aid efforts.

Dr Bawumia, speaking during an interview with the Oxford Business Group (OBG), explained, “In a sense, COVID-19, in some paradoxical way, has jump-started our ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ mission. It has allowed us to be more self-reliant and we have now, by way of policy, through this whole experience said government procurement should be very much directed, when possible, to the local industries. We’re seeing a good response and that is going to drive our policy going forward.”

He added that Ghana’s progress in digitalisation had also proved beneficial when the coronavirus pandemic emerged.

“The pandemic has facilitated the implementation of innovative public health solutions that even included the use of drones, while also providing citizens with access to key government services online and allowing many of them to work from home,” the Vice President added.

EC: 88,000 duplications detected in voters register rectified

0

The Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed that it has rectified all duplicate voter identification numbers that were detected during the just-ended voter registration exercise.

Chairperson, Jean Mensa, addressing a press conference on Monday, explained that the duplicates occurred because the registration kits were offline hence all voter ID numbers were issued independently.

Jean Mensa said 88,000 duplicates were detected when the national data came together online.

According to her, the EC has taken steps to issue new ID cards with the new numbers to the affected voters.

She added that political parties and their agents would be invited to monitor the re-issuance of the said duplicate ID cards.

Jean Mensa assured Ghanaians that all those who have been affected would vote on December 7.

She further disclosed that the duplicates were recorded because some registration kits had the same unique code.

“To prevent the duplication of voter ID numbers, each kit is given a unique code. What we realised during the registration was that in instances where the registration kits become faulty, they were withdrawn from the field and a new one was sent to the field and the same code was put on the new one,” Mrs Mensah said.

“The same code as the one withdrawn was placed on the new one. However, when the faulty kit was brought back to the field, that code was not changed and so you realised that we had two kits with the same code and this meant that they would produce the same ID numbers”.

She said the current voter database does not contain any duplicate voter ID numbers.

I have been able to engage the other players as well and what I have done is to communicate positively with them on the way forward, what ought to be done, what cannot be accepted in the team and all that,” he said

“The message is clear and they are aware of what to do when it is time. I am looking forward to a very good response, a team that is disciplined. Apart from the fact that when we go on the field to play, behavior outside the field of play is also key for us.

“These are things I have done and of course I have learned myself about the game in terms of how to approach it, how to give the players chance, make them comfortable when they come around to play. I have positively engaged in all these areas and I believe that what is ahead of us is difficult but can be done in a positive way.”
