GHS to striking nurses: ‘We need you to fight COVID-19 ‘

0

The Ghana Health Service(GHS) has appealed to striking nurses to call off their strike and return to work to help in the fight against COVID-19.

According to Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye, Director of the Ghana Health Service, the nation was on the verge of winning the war against COVID-19 and it is unfortunate for nurses to strike at such a crucial time.

In an interview on an Accra-based FM station, Dr Kuma-Aboagye said “we are appealing to the nurses to come back to work in the midst of COVID-19.”

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA), meanwhile, has called on the National Labour Commission (NLC) to apologise to the striking nurses and midwives over the decision to block their industrial action in court.

According to Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, the GMA Chairman of the Ashanti region, the move by NLC has the tendency to provoke the health workers.

“I think the labour commission should apologize to nurses for the stance they wanted to take. Going forward, they shouldn’t employ such tactics. Once you go to court in that manner you make people angry. These are people who have sacrificed so much, they have given everything.”

“They are asking that the same hospitals they are working they are given some basic care and leverage and not to continue with the situation where when they are sick they are asked to pay initial cost before they are treated.”

Background

Nurses and midwives across the country commenced strike action on Monday, September 21,2020 over poor conditions of service.

It comes after the failure of government to agree with the health workers on their demand for improved conditions of service.

A press release by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association noted “having reconvened in the meetings held on 15th and 16th September 2020 the posture of the Employer changed for the better but did not meet the expectation of the majority of Nurses, Midwives, Physician Assistants and Certified Registered Anaesthetists in Ghana.”

The statement, therefore, directed its members to stay away from work until the outstanding issues are addressed with their employer.

Meanwhile, an Accra High Court on Friday granted an interlocutory injunction application by the National Labour Commission against the strike.

The move by the court presided by Justice Frank Aboagye Rockson is to stop the health workers from their industrial action.

President Akufo-Addo: Zero active Coronavirus cases ultimate aim

0

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has stated that the target of his government with regard to the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, is to record zero active cases in the country.

President Akufo-Addo, addressing the nation in his seventeenth (17th) address since the outbreak of the virus in Ghana on continuing measures taken by his government against the spread of COVID-19, said inspite of what is a very positive outlook in Ghana’s fight against the spread of COVID-19, the country is not out of the woods yet and that means, the people of Ghana cannot afford to let their guards down.

“As we work to rid the virus from our shores, let us continue to remember at all times that this virus is no respecter of persons and has recked its havoc on every country on the planet. There are countries that are imposing lockdowns all over again, others are imposing curfews all in a bid to curb the onset of fresh infections and a second wave” President Akufo-Addo said.

The President further charged the citizenry to continue to look out for one another and remain each other’s keeper, united, and with one goal in mind”, which is to win the fight against COVID-19.

“We will emerge victorious in the fight against COVID-19. Zero active cases must be the ultimate aim” President Akufo-Addo added.

According to President Akufo-Addo, some ten thousand and sixty one (10,061) passengers as at Friday, the 18th of September 2020, have been tested at the Kotoka International Airport.

“A total of twenty six positive cases have been recorded from the test in Kotoka. Let us pause for a moment, and imagine what would have happened that theae 26 positives had not been detected and had been allowed to mingle with the population” President Akufo-Addo stated.

“Let me assure you again that as President of the Republic, i will do everything in my power, to protect you and stop the importation of the virus into our country and limit and contain its spread. This is my solemn commitment to you” the President further said.

On the wearing of face masks, the President said per the new executive instruction issued on the 14th of September 2020, it remains mandatory in Ghana unit 14th December 2020.

“Until 14th of December 2020, the wearing of masks remains mandatory and the law enforcement agencies will be required to ensure this directive is respected by all. It has served us well in the fight against COVID-19, so i urge each and every one of us to wear our mask and do so correctly anytime we leave our homes” The President noted.

President Akufo-Addo recalled that on friday, 18th September, five hundred and thirty-one thousand, six hundred and seventy-four (531,674) JHS 3 students completed the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). SHS 3 students also, President Akufo-Addo said, on 5th September, wrote the last paper of the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE). To this end, the President congratulated all the graduating students and express delight in the fact that the COVID-19 Pandemic was not allowed to derail their education.

“I am particularly excited at this development because, despite the fears and genuine anxiety expressed by some, and the criticisms proffered by some in the political space, these students have gone to school, studied, sat and completed their examinations unscathed. Their forward march in life has not been interrupted. And, by the grace of God, the predictions made by some of widespread infections and even deaths did not materialise” President Akufo-Addo said.

Resumption of Football

With respect to football, the President said, “after due consultations with the Ghana Football Association, it has been decided that the Ghana Premier League and the Division One Football League will restart on Friday, 30th October, with a full regime of testing of the players, technical and management staff”.

Wearing of masks by spectators at stadia will be mandatory. The restart of all other sporting competitions will be determined on a case-by-case basis, pending consultations between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the respective sport associations” the President pointed out.

President Akufo-Addo: Government extends compulsory wearing of nose mask by 3 months

0

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has extended the compulsory wearing of nose mask by an additional three months, the Executive Instrument (EI) making wearing of nose masks compulsory in Ghana.

President Akufo-Addo signed the extension of the EI on Monday, September 14.

During his televised address to the nation on Sunday, September 20, 2020, Akufo-Addo said, that wearing masks, properly, will now be in force till Monday, December 14.

“On Monday, 14 September 2020, I extended the Executive Instrument of the mandatory wearing of face masks by three months. So, until December 14, 2020, the wearing of masks remains mandatory. The law enforcement agencies will be required to ensure this directive is respected by all,” he said.

He continued: “It has served us well in the fight against COVID-19, so I urge each and every one of us to wear our mask and do so correctly anytime we leave our homes. This is the new normal requirement of our daily existence until the virus disappears.”

President Akufo-Addo through the Executive Instrument, on June 14, 2020, made the wearing of face masks mandatory in the wake of a sharp rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in Ghana.

It was initially restricted to the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central and Western regions but later extended to the whole country.

“It is important for me to remind residents of the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions, where a great majority of cases have been recorded, and in the Western and Central Regions, where we are seeing an increase in infectious cases, to continue to adhere strictly to the social distancing and in-house hygiene protocols announced,” Akufo-Addo had warned during his address on Sunday, June 14.

“With the doctors and scientists telling us that the virus is transmitted from human contact, through talking, singing, coughing and sneezing, which results in sending droplets of the virus from one person to another, residents of these four regions, and, indeed, all Ghanaians, must remember that the wearing of masks is now mandatory.

“Leaving our homes without a face mask or face covering on is an offence. The Police have been instructed to enforce this directive, which is the subject of an Executive Instrument,” the President said as part of his address.

In paragraph 4(2) of E.I. 164 states that any person who fails to comply with the mandatory wearing of nose masks shall be punished in accordance with Section 6 of Act 1012.

Section 6 of Act 1012 reads, “a person who fails to comply with the restrictions imposed under the Executive Instrument issued under subsection 1 of Section 2 commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of not less than 1,000 penalty units (GHS12,000) and not more than 5,000 penalty units (GHS 60,000) or to a term of imprisonment not less than four years and not more than 10 years or to both.”

President Akufo-Addo: $150 Coronavirus testing fee legitimate

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that the $150 COVID-19 testing fee being charged passengers at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) shows that the test is of high quality and thus justified.

The President , speaking to the nation for the 17th time since Ghana recorded its first two cases of the novel Coronavirus in March, 2020, stated that, the test at the Airport has detected a total of 26 positive cases of COVID-19.

President Akufo-Addo said, “Let us pause for a moment and imagine what would have happened if these 26 positive cases had not been detected and had been allowed to mingle with the population.

“Even though the cost of 150 United States dollars per passenger for the mandatory airport Covid test has been criticized in certain quarters, the value of the test in a speed, accuracy and savings for passengers who no longer have to bear the cost of the 14 days mandatory quarantine in hotels has been clearly established.”

Passengers who arrive in the country at KIA are being charged $150 per the PCR test, a fee that has been criticised by a section of the Ghanaian public.

But, the President indicated that, a lot of people who have experienced at first hand the service being offered at Ghana’s international airport have praised the country for the innovative and farsightedness displayed at the airport.

“Let me assure you again that as president I will do everything in my power to protect you and stop the import of the virus into the country and limit the spread, this is my pledge,” he stressed.

Ampofo Ankrah: “Jobs for the youth means Beach Soccer is a whole new industry waiting to take off in Ghana”

0

The Chairman of Ghana Beach Soccer, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has boldly predicted that any administration to take Beach soccer in Ghana seriously, will create jobs, offer opportunities and establish a completely new industry in the country.

He was responding to media commentary surrounding the manifesto promise of Ghana’s NDC party to support the growth, development and promotion of the sand sport in Ghana.

“If a sport is specifically mentioned in any manifesto, that can only be good news. Whether or not promises become reality is another matter altogether. But we are encouraged by the mention of Beach soccer and the discussions it has generated especially regarding the potential creation of jobs for the youth”.

According to the sports journalist turned sports administrator, the slow development of the game in Ghana is largely due to the lack of boldness and clear understanding that policy makers have, when it comes to long term planning and vision for non traditional sports.

“Let’s put the actual game aside for a moment and explore what else comes with beach soccer as a potential industry.

Sports tourism, transportation, hospitality, sale of food and beverages, coastal regeneration, sanitation, recreational- health, entertainment, festivals and culture….just to mention a few related potential areas of interest”.

Ampofo Ankrah was speaking exclusively to Sports Zone after his appointment as Communications Director for the Lagos based African Beach Soccer Union (ABSU) along with five other Ghanaians.

He said that beach soccer stakeholders and the wider coastal community are cautiously optimistic by the development but would seek further insight and clarifications as to exactly what form the widely discussed manifesto promises for beach soccer would take.

Asked if he had met former President Mahama or President Nana Addo to discuss beach soccer development, his reply was this;

“I say this with the greatest respect, that any leader who truly believes in the youth of Ghana and their development through education and sports would grab beach soccer as a baby with both hands and invest in it’s potential. So let’s all wait and see who will walk the talk”.

John Mahama: Suame Magazine to go digital under NDC government

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s largest opposition party, has promised to step up infrastructural development at Suame Magazine, a renowned metal fabrication enclave, when the party wins the December general election.

Former President and flag-bearer of the NDC, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, speaking at a ‘Town Hall Meeting’ in Kumasi, said “One of the party’s key agenda is to introduce modern diagnostic equipment to modify the methods of repairing and fixing vehicles.”

The NDC party intends to train artisans at the enclave to adopt contemporary methods of metal engineering and vehicle repairs to add value to their work.

The largest metal fabrication enclave in the West African Sub-Region, Suame Magazine, is captured under the NDC’s ‘People’s Manifesto’ for the December 7 polls and plans to develop it include transforming the area into an industrial park.

According to the party, it would be working closely with the Suame Magazine Industrial Development Organization (SMIDO) to give the area a befitting status.

Former President Mahama said in pursuance of the NDC’s vision, his administration would invest generally in the infrastructural development of the enclave.

Suame Magazine, situated in the Suame Municipality of the Ashanti Region, provides more than 200, 000 direct and indirect jobs to the people, according to the SMIDO.

The metal engineering and vehicle repairs industry, in spite of its strategic importance to the local economy, is beset with some pertinent challenges – such as the excessive exposure of artisans to harmful chemicals in the course of their work and conservative manual working practices.

Some research scientists and health experts have suggested the creation of a safer working environment to protect the artisans.

The persistent exposure of the artisans to all forms of poisonous chemicals, especially those from the used engine oil, which could find their way into one’s internal organs, had to be addressed.

According to some experts of the College of Engineering of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, such harmful exposure had its own devastating health implications, especially on one’s kidney and liver.

Former President Mahama said the provision of good roads, health, and skills-acquisition training facilities, as well as insurance schemes for the artisans, were also part of the NDC’s plans for the enclave.

The ‘Town Hall Meeting’ was designed by the opposition party to interact and also explain to the public, some of the thematic areas of its recently-launched ‘People’s Manifesto’.

It talks about the vision of the party in the area of job and wealth creation, technology and industrial development, youth, infrastructural and women’s development, amongst others.
