Minister: Kumasi Airport to reach global standards by mid-2021

0

Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, has said ongoing expansion works on the Kumasi Airport is anticipated to reach unprecedented international standards.

According to the Minister, moves are in place to convert the Kumasi Airport into a world-class air travel hub.

The development comes after an amount of US$300 million was set aside by the government to implement the entire expansion works on the airport.

Simon Osei-Mensah, providing updates at government’s weekly Nation Building Updates on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, in Accra, said the expansion works on the Kumasi Airport is set to be completed by the second quarter of 2021.

The minister said “We are extending the runway by an additional 230 meters and it can take Boeing 737-800 and that is what we call an international airport. So that when I check-in at Kumasi, I will not stop in Accra but fly straight to the United Kingdom. That is what we are going to see latest by the middle of next year.”

Meanwhile, the completion of the Kumasi Airport will make it the second international airport in the country after the main Kotoka International Airport.

The entire expansion project entails the extension of the runway from 1981m to 2300m to house the likes of the Boeing 737-800 series aircraft, the construction of a new world-class terminal, construction of additional aprons as well as other ancillary works.

Why Shatta Wale was chased out of Krofrom

0

Shatta Wale, the Ghanaian Dancehall musician, was driven out of Krofrom, a suburb in Kumasi by an irate crowd believed to be friends of the late Junior US who was killed in his home in the United States on May 20, 2019.

Self-acclaimed dancehall king Shatta Wale, prior to his visit to Kumasi, was warned by this group of people not to step foot in the area because he failed to attend the funeral of the late musician despite how close they were when he was alive.

The people also alleged that Shatta was owing Junior US GH¢200,000 before he died and until he refunds the money, he should never visit the town.

However, Shatta failed to heed to the advice and the threats of these people as he stormed the area with his convoy as part of his ‘Kumerica Invasion’ tour.

Upon arrival, Shatta Wale was mobbed by a group of angry youth who would have destroyed his cars if not for police intervention.

When Junior US died and was brought to his hometown, Krofrom to be buried, everyone expected Shatta Wale to be there but he never showed up at the funeral.

This angered the youth who believed Shatta Wale has betrayed Junior US and swore to beat him whenever he comes to Krofrom for anything.

In a video sighted to this effect, Shatta Wale with his convoy had to flee the town to save their lives because the youth unleashed their anger on him, destroying their cars

Meanwhile, sources reveal that Shatta Wale’s reason for visiting ‘Krofrom’ was to shoot a music video for his ‘Kumerica Invasion’ album.

The album features up and coming rappers from Kumasi, many of whom gained recognition during the Kumerica wave.

Accra Hearts of Oak celebrates 109th birthday

0

Today, November 11, 2020, marks the 109 years of existence since Accra Hearts of Oak was founded.

Some Ghana Premier League (GPL) clubs including Legon Cities, Medeama, Ashantigold, and Liberty Professionals took to Twitter to celebrate the Phobians on their birthday.

Asante Kotoko, Accra Hearts of Oak’s arch-rival, also joined the celebrations on Twitter.

Happy 109th birthday to the oldest existing football club in the country.

The club was supposedly birthed by 11 men on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1911.

The club from its little beginnings in Cape Coast has risen to become the most iconic club in the country alongside Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

The club with 19 Ghana Premier League (GPL) titles, ten FA cup honours, and two President Cups, are the winners of the CAF Champions League in 2000 are 109 years.

It is the only Ghanaian club to have won the CAF Confederation Cup. A feat achieved at the expense of rivals Kumasi Asante Kotoko in 2005.

The club arguably gave Ghana the best assembly of talented players in the Premier League (64 Battalion).

The club once had eleven of its players making up the starting team of the Black Stars and secured a valuable 0-0 draw with a star-studded Nigerian side.

In the last decade, the issues on and off the pitch have left a lot to be desired but it does not take away the fact that the story of Ghana football cannot be said without mentioning the Rainbow club. The club with beautiful colors and beautiful men.

The construction of the Pobiman Sports Complex coupled with the recruitment done in the just-ended transfer window has filled fans of the club with renewed hopes that the club will fight its way back to the top of African football and reclaim its lost pride.

On the occasion of their 109th birthday, we wish Hearts of Oak the very best in the 2020/2021 league season which kicks off on Friday.

President Akufo-Addo to Biden: Deliver unity, security, progress and prosperity to Americans

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said he is hoping that U.S. President-Elect Joe Biden’s tenure as President of the United States of America “will be marked by the delivery of unity, security, progress and prosperity to all Americans”.

President Akufo-Addo wrote those words in a congratulatory message he posted on his official social media platforms on Saturday, November 7, when news broke that Joe Biden was projected to win the US Presidential election.

President Akufo-Addo stated: “On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, I extend my warmest congratulations to the President-Elect of the United States of America, Vice President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., on his decisive victory in the elections of 3rd November 2020. I also congratulate Senator Kamala Harris on becoming the first woman Vice President-Elect of the United States.”

President Akufo-Addo hoped that under the Presidency of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, the “relations between Ghana and the United States of America will continue to grow from strength to strength, relations which have, over the years, been based on a shared agenda of freedom, development, progress and prosperity.

“Warm congratulations, once again, to President-Elect Joe Biden, Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, and the people of the United States of America.

“God bless the American people, and best wishes for their country’s continued success.”

According to CNN, AP and BBC in separate projections, Joe Biden has won the US presidential race. He defeated Donald Trump in a fiercely contested election.

Kamala Harris, who was his running mate will be the nation’s first Black and South Asian vice president, and the first woman to hold that office.

Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral college votes, which is the latest result from the remaining ballots being counted in about four states, put Biden over the 270 electoral college votes needed to win.

Joe Biden was spending the morning with his family at his home in Delaware when he saw the news that he was projected the winner of his native Pennsylvania and will be the 46th president of the United States.

John Mahama on Biden’s victory: I’m also confident of an NDC victory

0

John Dramani Mahama, the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is optimistic about a win in the impending elections hence his congratulatory message to Joe Biden.

Former President Mahama in his congratulatory message to the President-elect of the United States of America Joe Biden said he cannot wait to work with him.

“Congratulations #POTUS elect Joe Biden. Your resilience is admirable. It’s taken sheer grit and determination to chalk this victory. I look forward to us working together for the mutual benefit of our two countries and for a better world that ensures social justice and sustainable development,” John Mahama wrote.

However, his congratulatory message to Biden has earned him attacks from some leading members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based TV station , however, John Dramani Mahama said he is confident of an NDC win hence his message to Biden to build a better working relationship ahead of his win in the 2020 election.

“When I say working with him, it’s because I’m confident that we will win this election,” he indicated.

The former President indicated that he intends to collaborate with Joe Biden in strengthening Ghana’s energy sector which to him has been manhandled by the current administration.

“When I talk about working together, Ghana we live in a global village and the US as the most powerful nation in the world has a lot of connections with what we do here in Ghana. When I was in government we signed the Millennium Challenge Compact but unfortunately, this government messed up the PDS issue and that has led to us losing a substantial amount of funding that would have helped to strengthen our electricity distribution system.”

“When I say working with him one of the priorities is to see whether cannot get back the money under the MCC to improve our electricity distribution network whether we can take another shot on what we agreed under the challenge compact.”

President Akufo-Addo: Ghana on the brink of second wave with high coronavirus rate

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed worry that Ghana will be experiencing the second wave of the novel Coronavirus outbreak due to the rise in daily infections.

In his 19th televised address to the nation on Sunday, November 8, President Akufo-Addo warned Ghanaians to strictly adhere to Coronavirus safety protocols including wearing of face masks, handwashing, and social distancing.

President Akufo-Addo explained, “The number of daily infections is on the rise, from an average of 25 new cases per day then, to an average of over 130 new cases per day in the course of the last two weeks”.

The president further added: “In Greater Accra, with the exception of two districts, all districts have reported cases. In contrast, we have only seen a cluster of cases in the other regions from only a handful of districts. These figures, obviously, give cause for concern, in view of what is happening in Europe and America, following the outbreak of a second wave of infections that is engulfing so many other countries.”

President Akufo-Addo further indicated that an analysis of the active case data suggests that the Greater Accra Region accounts for 75% of the virus with Ashanti, Bono, Eastern and Western regions being responsible for 16% of active cases.

“The remaining 11 regions make up four percent of the cases, with arrivals at Kotoka International Airport [being] responsible for the other five percent,” he said.

Akufo-Addo also noted: “Scientists at the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens, at the University of Ghana, Legon, collaborating with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, who are studying the genetic make-up of the virus in Ghana, have established that the virus has not changed.

“Our observation, however, is that a reduction in compliance with the preventive protocols accounts for the increase in infections.”

The Ghanaian highlife and afrobeat singer-songwriter, Kuami Eugene, is out with an album of 14 tracks titled Son of Africa featuring Zlatan, DJ Mensah, Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, Samini, Falz, Obaapa Christy, Eddy Kenzo and Prince Bright.

Known in real life as Eugene Kwame Marfo, Kuami Eugene has revealed that it wasn’t difficult getting other artistes to feature on his album.

In an exclusive interview on a Cape Coast-based FM station, Kuami Eugene disclosed that his personality and solid brand make it less difficult to collaborate with other artists from different African countries.

Signed to Lynx Entertainment, he said most artistes from other countries especially in Africa feel privileged to be affiliated with his rockstar brand.

“Collaborating with artistes from other countries depends on the kind of personality you have as well. Sometimes being a big artiste like rockstar people would like my affiliation, he said.

“My brand is solid so most artistes would like to be involved with what I’m doing. So it makes it less difficult in getting other artistes from neighbouring African countries to work with. I think that is what you need in order to get features and collabo with other artistes” he added.

When asked how long he took in recording his Son of Africa album, he said “In all it took me about five to six months to put my Son of Africa album together.”
