The amount to be returned, per details of the report, was from six meetings which spun from 2018 through to 2020.

These included; August to December Board sitting for which he was paid, GH¢5,560; four board sittings which he was paid GH¢1440 each from July 2019 to February 2020 and an Entity Tender Committee meeting for which he was paid GH¢1376.

According to the report, Mr Amidu saw his meetings as Special Prosecutor to be part of his official work thus saw no reason to be paid separately for attending them.

He wrote “It is essential for me to state for the purpose of the records, and contrary to public perceptions, that my appointment letter was received on 5th February 2020 (almost two (2)-years after my appointment). The copy addressees made no efforts to honour any of the conditions of appointment in terms of emoluments and benefits of the appointment ever since my warrant of appointment was issued on 23rd February 2018 to the date of my letter of resignation.”

The statement further read; “The Deputy Special Prosecutor has also not been paid any emoluments since her appointment, and there is the need to redress that situation for her now that I am out of the way.”

Ola Michael: Lilwin knows nothing about film making

0

Ola Michael, Radio host and filmmaker, has said Kwadwo Nkansah aka Lil Win, knows nothing about filmmaking.

In a discussion on an Accra-based FM He argued that actors cannot be described as filmmakers.

According to Ola Michael, Lilwin came in the industry begging and he was even taking GH¢20 as payment.

He stated that Mr Jackson Bentum kept on begging directors and producers to give Lilwin roles—but he has abandoned him after he got the fame and money.

The outspoken media personality said he laughed when he heard Lilwin’s claim that he was going to revive the movie industry with his YouTube series.

Ola Michael stressed that Lilwin doesn’t know anything about the job that he is doing.

According to him, Lilwin being an executive producer doesn’t mean he is a filmmaker.

Commenting on his heated argument with Kwaku Manu on a TV program last weekend, Ola disclosed that all the actors who were at the studio of the television station secretly supported Kwaku Manu.

He averred they were against Lilwin’s behaviour and utterances.

EC: All parties have been given copies of the register for Election 2020

0

Dr Bossman Asare, a Deputy Commissioner at the Electoral Commission (EC), has said All the political parties in Ghana have been given copies of the voters register to be used for the December 7, 2020, presidential and parliamentary elections.

Debunking claims by some quarters that political parties have not yet received the register from the Electoral Commission (EC) a few weeks to the elections.

National Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition party, has questioned the elections management body for failing to make available the roll to the parties ahead of the polls.

However, Dr Asare, speaking on an Accra-based TV station in an interview on Monday, November 16, said that “The parties got the register about ten or eight days ago, the day the electoral commission appeared in parliament.

“All the parties have the registers, we have given the registers for the polling stations, constituencies,

Dr. Asare further revealed that all the printing houses that are in charge of the ballot papers are credible.

“At all the printing centres the parties have their agents there. Aside that EC officials, security officers are also there and so the complaints are just one of those political caricatures that people want to champion,” he said.

He added “All the things we have to do, we have done them so we are expecting that come December 7, all our polling centres, all the materials they need, they will be to get everything, the commission is fully on course and we are set.”

KIA: Free mandatory coronavirus test for 5-12 years begins

0

Children between the ages of 5-12years will be required to undergo mandatory COVID-19 screening upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport(KIA) free of charge. This took effect from Monday, November 16.

But, children below five (5) years are not included in the test. All others outside this age bracket must pay US$150 for the antigen test carried out at the Upper Arrival Hall of the Terminal 3 at KIA by Frontier Health Care.

Published by the Ghana Airports Company Limited on Friday, the updated COVID-19 guidelines for Kotoka International Airport (KIA) noted that: “Children between the ages of 5-12years will undergo testing on arrival free of charge.”

The decision to include children in the age bracket indicated is because of the rising positive cases recorded amongst in-bound passengers at KIA and within the general population.

Detected by screening all arriving passengers, imported cases of COVID-19 has gone up by 87 percent, increasing from 92 to 172 between mid-October and November 6.

A total of 54,000 arriving international passengers had been screened with 172 positive cases recorded as at November 6.

On September 1, Ghana re-opened the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for scheduled passenger operations, after six months of closure, with a stringent testing regime in place.

Upon arrival, passengers who are required to pay US$150 for the COVID-19 test online prior to arrival in Ghana, have their receipts verified before proceeding to the sampling cubicles located at Upper Arrival of Terminal 3, KIA for their samples to be taken.

Results are transmitted electronically to Port Health in the main arrival hall.

At the arrival hall, passengers will be screened at one of the Port Health stations and results of their COVID-19 tests made known to them.

Arriving passengers who test negative will then proceed to immigration and onto baggage claim for their luggage and then exit the terminal.

Positive cases will receive further clinical assessment and treatment.

Akonnor: Andre Ayew’s injury ‘big problem’ for Ghana

0

The head coach of the Black Stars, Charles Akonnor, has bemoaned the absence of Andre Dede Ayew in Ghana’s game against Sudan.

Andre Ayew, after bagging two goals against the Sudanese at the Cape Coast Stadium on Friday, will sit out today’s game due to injury.

The Swansea forward sustained an injury in training that has ruled him out of the game that could confirm Ghana’s participation in the 2020 Africa Cup of Nations.

Apart from Ayew, Akonnor will also be without Richard Ofori, his first-choice goalie, who has been suspended due to accumulated cards.

Akonnor, speaking ahead of the game, said that Dede’s absence is a major challenge for the team.

He is however confident that the team will navigate their way out and bag a win which will make Ghana the third team to qualify for the tournament.

“First of all, he is the leader of the team and so if you don’t have your leader, it’s always a problem,” he said.

“But having said that, these are professionals, they have been Europe for quite sometime now, they are doing well so they know what to do, and of course, with a bit of guidance from the technical team, I think they will be able to do well.

“He (Andre) is not in and so it won’t be necessary for us to talk about it. Yes, we have lost him, he delivered, he gave us two goals the other day.

“But now he is no more there and so we have to deal with it and strategically, we will find a way as to how we will play and get success,” Akonnor concluded.

The Black Stars have however been boosted with the return of Mubarak Wakaso, Majeed Ashimeru and Jeffrey Schlupp who missed the first match at the Cape Coast Stadium.

The game is at 13:00 GMT .

Martin Amidu has resigned as Special Prosecutor

0

Reports reaching us indicates that Martin Amidu has resigned from his position as Special Prosecutor.

According to Mr Amidu, he is resigning because he does not feel that President Nana Akufo-Addo has done enough to safeguard the independence of his office.

Mr Amidu said: “The events of 12/11/20 removed the only protection I had from the threats & plans directed at me for undertaking the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption assessment report & dictates that I resign as the Special Prosecutor immediately”.

Mr Amidu, in a letter addressed to Nana Akufo-Addo, charged the president to find a suitable replacement for him.

“The one condition upon which I accepted to be nominated as the Special Prosecutor when you invited me to your Office on 10th January 2018 was your firm promise to me that you will respect and ensure same by your Government for my independence and freedom of action as the Special Prosecutor,” he stated.

Mr Amidu was nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as Special Prosecutor on January 11, 2018, and was subsequently approved by Parliament.

President Akufo-Addo at the swearing-in of Martin Amidu stated that “We expect the Special Prosecutor to discharge his duties vigorously with courage, without fear or favour, ill will or malice in accordance with the Rule of Law.”

His appointment was greeted with a lot of excitement because of his overt abhorrence for corruption.

It was expected that his strict and firm personality was exactly what the country needed to fight alleged corrupt practices and abuse of office.

But almost three years into the job, Amidu has come under intense pressure in what many believe has been an underwhelming performance.

Amidu has always maintained that he has not lost his penchant to go after corrupt officials, but persons in high places were frustrating his work.

In 2018, he complained about how some critical ministries and agencies had refused to produce public records on demand to aid the office in critical investigations regarding issues of corruption in the Akufo-Addo government.

He made the revelation at the National Audit Forum organised by the Ghana Audit Service. Martin Amidu added that his office was ‘under-resourced’ contributing to its inability to work effectively.

“You ask for information you can’t get it; you ask for docket; the docket cannot be produced. You ask a minister for a record; the record cannot be produced. How do you fight corruption when those appointed by the president who has a vision are not coordinating with the office of the special prosecutor to achieve his mandate? That is the challenge we have to face.”

Earlier on yesterday , investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni whose work led to the removal of the PPA boss from office by the President said that the Special Prosecutor must be bold and resign in order to draw attention to the problems of the office.

“My surprise is why Martin Amidu hasn’t resigned. Because he keeps giving one reason to the other, if all of these is continuing and you have no solution to it, the best is to resign so they could be some attention to the challenges in that office.

“You have somebody in office and for 3 years the only work he’s done is the Agyapa deal. So if there are challenges that are not being resolved, the best thing for him [Martin Amidu] is to resign”.

We came back to music because of our fans – Asaase Aban

0

Musician Hiplife group Asaase Aban is back again with some changes in their music style.

The Asaase Aban group is now made up of two instead of three people, and one has switched from rapping to singing.

The hip-life group was formerly made up of Samuel Hackman, Yoba B, Richard Danso, Drasty and Felix Walker.

Speaking on Max Morning Show, hosted by Alex Kwesi Crassie and Babiee Adjoa Dappah, Asaase Aban shared why they are back to the Music scene. According to them, they came back into doing music again because their fans were calling for their return.

Asaase Aban said “I think it’s our fans, because they keep buzzing us to come back, the messages, the DMs, everywhere we go they keep saying you guys must come back, so we are doing it for our fans that is why we are back.”

According to Asaase Aban’s perspective, “Music itself is a long-term investment. So we communicate with our fans and others on social media and others that are not our fans.”

“They buzz us and ask where we have gone to hide and others but we keep telling them we are learning more about the music industry. So that when we come back we will give them quality good music,” the group said.

Personally, I have learnt how to get the best of sound when it gets to people’s ears and the best lyrical content to put on a song.

They also stated that, things were really working out for them because they were playing shows from organizers and also organize events at places that they involve people or teams that can help them make the event come on.

Stonebwoy: $150 Coronavirus test fees at Airport is too high

0

Ghanaian multiple award-winning dancehall artiste Stonebwoy Burniton has appealed to the government of Ghana to consider reducing the $150 Covid-19 test fees for all arriving passengers at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

On Tuesday, September 1, the mandatory tests for passengers came into force following the reopening of Ghana’s airport after almost six months of closure.

However, many have questioned the considerations that went into the arrival on the $150 fees for the PCR tests.

The government had mounted a spirited defence at the charge, saying it is on the average as compared to countries running similar tests.

But, Stonebwoy, speaking to Babiee Adjoa Dappah in a special interview on Max TV, said “It is all about the corona test fees. I wouldn’t be the first person to show face of addressing or presenting my submission or submitting my plea. This is because this is not a fine thing.”

“I actually feel that $150 dollars is actually on the high side. The corona situation has affected everybody, we know the level of employment and all that, from when it began people were given food and I also gave somethings,” Stonebwoy added.

He further said “We haven’t found vaccines and life has not come back to normal. But, I will manage. Basically we are asking for a reduction. Also I would really want to understand and I know that so long as I have a concern many people also share the same concern.”

Stonebwoy said “When I was travelling to South Africa, I did the test and presented it at the airport and was allowed to fly to south Africa. And the same happened when I was returning I paid again.”

“I am not trying to call for attention. But irrespective of the number of times you have to test because you need to stay alive. $150 is the take home pay of some of us. Which is about Ghc800 and Ghc900 cedis a month,” he added.

Former President Jerry John Rawlings is dead; He was 73

0

Former President Jerry John Rawlings is dead. The former president passed on after a brief illness on November 12, 2020.

According to reports, the former President Rawlings had been on admission at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for about a week for an undisclosed ailment. He was 73.

It will be recalled that Mr Rawlings recently lost and buried his mother last month.

Jerry John Rawlings was born in Accra on 22nd June 1947, to a Ghanaian mother from Dzelukope, near Keta, in the Volta Region, and a Scottish father.

Background of Rawlings

Jerry John Rawlings was born in Accra on 22nd June 1947, to a Ghanaian mother from Dzelukope, near Keta, in the Volta Region, and a Scottish father.

He was educated at Achimota School where he obtained his General Certificate of Education ‘O’ Level in 1966.

He enlisted as a Flight Cadet in the Ghana Air Force in August 1967, and was subsequently selected for officer cadet training at the Ghana Military Academy and Training School, Teshie, in Accra.

In March 1968, he was posted to Takoradi in the Western Region to continue his course.

He passed out in January 1969, as a commissioned Pilot Officer. He won the coveted “Speed Bird Trophy” as the best cadet in flying and airmanship.

He earned the rank of Flight-Lieutenant in April 1978. He was an efficient officer with a close rapport with his men.

During his service with the Ghana Air Force, he witnessed the deterioration of discipline and morale, reflecting the corruption of the regime of the Supreme Military Council (SMC) at that time.

As promotion brought him into contact with the privileged classes and their social values, his awareness of the injustices in society was sharpened.

He was thus regarded with some unease by the SMC. He read widely and discussed social and political ideas with a growing circle of like-minded friends and colleagues.

On May 28, 1979, Flt.-Lt. Rawlings, together with six others, appeared before a General Court Martial in Accra, charged with leading a mutiny of junior officers and men of the Ghana Armed Forces on 15th May, 1979. There was strong public reaction, especially after his statement had been read in court, explaining the social injustices that had prompted him to act.

The ranks of the Armed Forces, in particular, expressed deep sympathy with his stated aims. When he was scheduled for another court appearance on 4th June, 1979, Flt.-Lt. Rawlings was sprung from custody. With the support of both military and civilians, he led a revolt, which decisively ousted the Supreme Military Council from office and brought the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) into being.

Under the chairmanship of Flt.Lt. Rawlings, the AFRC carried out a “house-cleaning exercise” aimed at purging the Armed Forces and society at large of corruption and graft as well as restoring a sense of moral responsibility and the principles of accountability and probity in public life.

Meanwhile, following the programme already set in motion before the 4th June Uprising for civilian administration, general elections were held.

On 24th September 1979, the AFRC handed over to the civilian Government of the People’s National Party (PNP) under President Hilla Limann.

On 31st December 1981, Flt. Lt. Rawlings led a section of the Armed Forces to overthrow the PNP administration. A Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), composed of both civilian and military members, was established, with Flt-Lt. J.J. Rawlings as the Chairman.

His interests include reading, building model aircraft, horse-riding and swimming. He is married to Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings with whom he has four children – three girls and a boy.

Flt-Lt. Rawlings ceased to be a member of the Ghana Armed Forces with effect from September 14, 1992. He formed the National Democratic Congress, which contested and won the 1992 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. He and the party again won the 1996 elections.

His term of office ended in the year 2000.

He is the joint recipient of the 1993 World Hunger Prize. He holds an Honorary Doctor of Law Degree from Medgar Evers College, City University of New York and Lincoln University Doctorate Degree for Diplomacy and Development.
