Veteran gospel musician who doubles as a pastor, Josh Laryea, says men of God have led musicians astray from ministering the true gospel through their music.
According to him, the current crop of gospel musicians has lost touch with the true gospel and is singing solely for money-making.
Speaking in a recent interview with the media, the “Emmre” hitmaker stated that gospel music should be a spiritually uplifting song and not for monetary achievement.
“We’ve lost sight of the true purpose of gospel music. It’s time to shift focus,” he said.
The head pastor of Kharis Centre International stated that he was once a victim of such a trend and focused on songs that carried such prosperity messages instead of winning souls.
“I’ve been a victim myself, and it took a while for me to realize I was going off course. I started to notice that the lyrics of my songs were changing. Looking back now, I have some regrets, but I accept that at the time, I probably didn’t want to be a lone wolf, so I followed the trend,” he explained.
Josh Laryea attributed this phenomenon to pastors who often preach sermons full of prosperity messages rather than spreading ideas that would help people come closer to Christ and improve their lives.
“I will partly blame pastors for the shift in focus of gospel music. It is said that ‘you are what you hear’ and the outcome of what the church is doing is what is happening with gospel music now,” he said.
Josh Laryea therefore charged gospel musicians to change focus and not drift the attention of God’s children away from the true gospel.
