Hugo Broos’s comments about the organization of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco sent shockwaves all the way to Pretoria.
While many observers have unanimously praised the tournament’s logistical quality and infrastructure, the South African coach’s remarks regarding the lack of atmosphere and difficulties accessing stadiums quickly took on a political dimension.
With just days remaining before the end of the competition, his criticisms stood in stark contrast to the general consensus that this edition has been expertly managed.
The reaction was swift. South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Gayton McKenzie, stepped in to publicly disavow his coach.
“Yes, this is the best Africa Cup of Nations in history. I was furious with the Bafana Bafana coach. You don’t go to someone’s country and insult them on their own soil.”
“I want to apologise to Moroccans for Broos’s remarks. Hats off to Morocco. They have proven to the entire world that Africa is ready to host global events.”
