With just a month to the start of the 2024 WAFCON, Kim Lars Björkegren may begin to feel immense pressure following the Black Queens of Ghana’s disappointing loss to Ivory Coast.
The big Swede’s record as head coach of the Black Queens since taking over from Swiss coach Nora Hauptle, who out of frustration left to become the head coach of the Copper Queens of Zambia, is discouraging.
Having led the Queens in five international friendlies, Björkegren has won just one game, drawn twice, and suffered two narrow defeats to Morocco and Ivory Coast.
Though admitting the current mood in the camp of the Black Queens isn’t close to anywhere cheerful, Matilda Dzifa Dimedo, public relations officer of the team, assessed on Max FM’s Sports Pack show that the players are getting used to Björkegren’s style of coaching.
Ms Dimedo added that the lack of telepathy among the players is because of the number of newbies, including Abigail Kofia and Chantelle Hlorkah. The team’s struggle to gel on the pitch is slowly becoming a major concern to fans.
However, Ms Dimedo remains optimistic of the Black Queens’ chances at the WAFCON, facing Mali, South Africa, and Tanzania in Group C.
