‎Rush to hospital if you experience Mpox symptoms—Dr. Matey

Date:

A Public Health Physician, Dr. Louisa Ademki Matey has called on Ghanaians to rush to any government hospital, if they start experiencing feverishness and rashes.‎

‎According to her, the move will help curb the fast rising of Mpox in the country.

‎Speaking in an exclusive interview with Max Morning Show in Accra on Tuesday, Matey explained that the treatment of Mpox was free.

‎”If you experience symptoms like feverishness or rash just run to the hospital as much as possible. Don’t do self medication to worsen the situation. If you go to any government hospital, they will treat you for free. You won’t pay a dime,” she said.

‎Due to the Mpox outbreak in the country, Matey also indicated that health practitioners were going around to sensitize the public on the need for proper hygiene and to also trace those showing signs and symptoms of Mpox.

‎She charged the public to be receptive and shouldn’t stigmatize any health practitioner when they see them in their homes.

‎The Ghana Health Service (GHS) confirmed 26 new cases of Mpox, bringing the total number of infections across the country to 45.

‎The new cases were reported as of May 31, 2025, and were announced by the Ministry of Health in an update shared on its Facebook page on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

‎Although the number of confirmed cases has increased sharply, no deaths have been recorded. Two people are currently receiving treatment.

‎The rise in case numbers has been attributed to more active surveillance and improved contact tracing, which are helping to detect and isolate infections more quickly within communities.

‎Health authorities have urged the public to continue observing basic safety practices.

‎These include avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms, maintaining good hygiene, and visiting the nearest health facility if any symptoms appear.
