Renowned historian Yaw Anokye Frimpong has called on the government to factor the Western Region into its developmental agenda.
According to him, among all the 16 regions in the country, the Western region contributed 90 percent to the gross domestic product (GDP).
Speaking in an interview with Max Morning Agenda in Accra on Wednesday, the historian, who doubles as a lawyer, noted that the Western Region provided the nation with gold, bauxite, manganese, oil, and gas, yet little was done to develop the place.
“Imagine you have 16 children, and one is providing you all the necessary resources to cater for the rest. Who should you set your sights on?” he quizzed.
Anokye Frimpong said the Western Region had also given the country prominent personalities who have immensely contributed to national development.
Citing examples, he mentioned Anton Wilhem Amo, Paa Grant, Kwame Nkrumah, Akora Kofi Antubam, Professor Kwabena Frempong-Boateng, Nana Kwabena Nketsia IV, the National Chief Imam Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, and Gyadu Blay Ambolley, among other personalities.
Anokye Frimpong maintained that “the hand that lays golden eggs must not be starved” and expressed an urgent need for the government to develop the place.
“The Western Region is the most marginalized region in the country. There is no development that anyone could attest to at the place. That is what I want to draw the government’s attention to, to help build and develop the place,” he added.
