President Akufo-Addo to IGP: Apprehend killers of Mfantseman MP else ‘what will happen will happen’

0

James Oppong-Boanuh, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has been instructed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to as a matter of urgency apprehend the killers of the late MP for Mfantseman.

The murder of the MP occurred on Friday, October 9 by unknown assailants while returning from a campaign trip in the company of his aides.

According to the President Akufo-Addo, the unfortunate demise of the MP is a big blow to him, the incumbent NPP as well as the people of Mfantseman and Ghana in general.

“…this is why I have made it known to the IGP that if nothing is done about this particular matter, what will happen will happen,” President Akufo-Addo declared when he visited the bereaved family at their Mankessim residence in the Central Region.

President Akufo-Addo noted that the demise of Ekow Quansah Hayford is a test case for the IGP, and promised to take over the MP’s responsibilities by catering for the widow and children he left behind.

Akufo-Addo observed: “When you enter Parliament as a Member of Parliament, usually the first terms are used to study activities of the House. So, the second terms are the ones for doing the real work. So, I knew that in the 2020 elections, Ekow Quansah Hayford was going to win the seat, and he was one of the MPs I would have relied upon to help me in government but God knows best.”

He added, “I also came here to render my support to the family […], his children, and the family will be taken care of as far as I am alive and a well-deserving funeral will be done for him. Due to his hard work I had to stop whatever I was doing to visit the family to console you. I promise I will be present during his funeral as well”.

The IGP has, meanwhile, placed a GH¢20,000 bounty on the heads of the killers of the late MP.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations Directorate of the Ghana Police Service and signed by Superintendent of Police Sheila Kesse Abayie-Buckman, the Ghana Police Service explained that the money will only be given for credible information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of that heinous crime.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang: I didn’t pay attention to insensitive comments made about my nomination

0

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the first female running mate of the opposition National Democratic Congress, has disclosed how she felt and reacted to the handful of negative and insensitive comments that greeted her nomination as vice-candidate to former President John Dramani Mahama for the 2020 general elections.

Speaking on an Accra-based TV station, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said she paid no attention to the negative comments and could therefore not be bothered by them.

“To be very honest I didn’t pay much attention to these things. But you see, when you talk about women you don’t expect all of us to be at the same level, we are not. I think sometimes it betrays a certain psychology. If we are all down, there now and you want to rise; it instinctively sends waves of fear amongst some. Not because they don’t like you, but because they are not quite clear what this is all about.

We are all supposed to be on this lane, why are you crossing it? There has to be something wrong. So, if you don’t know why you are crossing that line then you can fall for it and lose confidence. So, whatever they said I think it’s more a betrayal of their own thoughts than what they think they know of me,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said.

Reacting to a statement made by Yaw Buaben Asamoa, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Pary, who at the time of her nomination announcement said former President Mahama does not take Ghanaians seriously, Madam Opoku-Agyemang described the statement as a pity coming from people within a political party which also has female appointees and elected officials.

“I think is a pity, it is a complete pity that anybody should say so. Especially from a political party that also has women and I think it was a wrong thing to say because he sends a message to the people that they shouldn’t vote for the women in his party. I think that was wrong and that was unnecessary for him to say so.” She added.

In the wake of her nomination as running mate for the opposition NDC, some critics mainly from the ruling NPP went as far as passing disparaging and insensitive comments about Prof. Naana Jane-Opoku Agyemang.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, well known as Chairman Wontumi described the former Minister of Education under the previous NDC administration as a “wicked woman” who “looks like a witch”.

Speaking on his Kumasi-based Wontumi FM he said, “When you look closely at her face and hair, you will realize that Jane Opoku-Agyemang looks like a witch”; Chairman Wontumi said after initially describing her as a “mallam or juju woman”.

Felicity Ahafianyo, the Principal Meteorologist at the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) has warned that Ghanaians all over the country should brace up for more rains in the coming days, at least up to the end of October.

According to her, every region of the country has been forecast to experience heavy rainfalls in the coming days.

For the Principal Meteorologist, those who have not yet experienced downpours should expect same in the coming days.

She revealed this, while speaking to an Accra-based TV station, on Midday on Saturday, October 10, 2020.

Her comments come after heavy rains earlier in the day rendered a lot of areas in the Greater Accra Region flooded.

The officer, who is in charge of central analysis at GMA, said it may be just the beginning of more rains to come.

She stressed that “From today to tomorrow, rain is still in the forecast.”

“We will have rains up to the end of October.

“And the point here is that almost all the regions is still in the forecast for rains.”

However, she stopped short of indicating the degree of rainfall to be experienced despite recent downpours causing floods.

“For now, in general terms, yes, there is rain for every area in all the regions that I have mentioned. If they don’t get it today, tomorrow they will get it.”

In rallying support for the team, Kurt Okraku said, “We plead with everyone to be very supportive, I know Ghanaians love their national team. We want them to win every game but we will come to that stage, we will be sure about the personnel to rely on in competitions.”

0

CK Akonnor, the Black Stars head coach, has blamed his side’s defeat to Mali to lack of preparation.

His comments come after Ghana suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Mali on Friday in Charles Akonnor’s first game as the Black Stars head coach.

Mali dominated and netted three unanswered goals against the neighbors making sure Akonnor begun his reign with a defeat.

According to coach Akonnor, his charges should not be blamed for the heavy loss as there was no cohesion and order against the West African side.

Speaking to an Accra0-based FM station, Akonnor said “I won’t blame the players for the defeat but the key thing which resulted in our loss to Mali was that the team was not organized,”

“The players didn’t know themselves because most of them were debutants and even the first time they’re playing together.”

“We trained for only two days and there was lack of understanding as well. These are the few things which affected us during the game”

“Mali didn’t play anything extraordinary but they were an organized side which handed them the victory”

Frimpong Manso: CK Akonnor needs time and patience

0

Frimpong Manso, Former Ghana international, has said Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor needs time to build a winsome side for the national team after suffering a humiliating defeat.

Charles Akonnor’s debut game as Black Stars coach was yesterday’s friendly game since his appointment early this year.

Led by Captain Andre Dede Ayew, the Black Stars were dominated and beaten by the Malians throughout the entire duration of the game.

Frimpong Manso, assessing the performance of CK Akonnor in his first game and that of the players, said “It’s too early to say that coach CK Akunnor is not capable of handling the national team, its just one match he has played. Let have the patience for him and support him.”

Speaking on an Accra-based FM station, he said “The formation deployed doesn’t account to the loss, but the players didn’t perform well.”

Ghana will take on Asian champions Qatar in their second friendly game on Monday.

Akonnor will be searching for his first win as head coach of the Black Stars.

C.K. Akonnor names his preferred squad for upcoming friendlies in Turkey with certain key players ruled out.

0

Charles K. Akonnor, the head coach of the Senior Ghana National team , announced his preferred squad for this week’s friendly matches against Mali and Qatar.

After nearly a year without active football, the Black Stars return to action as they come off against The Eagles of Mali on Friday, October 09 in Antalya, Turkey. This friendly match goes down as part of the preparations towards the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sudan. The Black Stars who last played a competitive game in November 2019, will be seeking to continue The Bring Back the Love campaign as they hope for a win against Mohammed Magassouba’s side(Mali).

Ghana, however were scheduled to play Equitorial Guinea three days later but the game was called off on Thursday 24th September. The Central African team cited their decision on the new travel restrictions imposed on the country due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The Football Association then scheduled a game against Qatar.

A major highlight of the call-ups was the absence of locally-based players. Coach Akonnor however, handed debut call-ups to France based Alexander Djiku who plays for Strasbourg, Yakubu Mohammed of Azam FC in Tanzania, Benson Anang of MSK Zilina in Slovakia, Emmanuel Lomotey of Amiens in France and youngest star Kamal Deen who plays for Danish side Nordsjaelland. John Antwi of Pyramid FC has also been handed a call-up by coach Akonnor. Turkey based Bernard Mensah makes a return to Black Stars for the first time in five years.

This upcoming clash will be the very first game C.K. Akonnor will coach after being appointed as the new head coach of the Black Stars back in January, after ex-coach Kwesi Appiah was shown the exit door by the GFA. The aura of tension around the coaching staff is very much obvious as CK Akonnor prepares ardently for a first win in charge of The Black Stars.

In the light of some crucial circumstances, certain key players will be unavailable for the squad in the friendly games at Turkey. Goalkeeper, Richard Ofori , most trusted shot-stopper for Ghana since 2016, will miss the friendly due to the expiration of his work permit in South Africa. Its renewal will take up a duration of at least two weeks.

John Antwi of Pyramid FC is also faced with the same work permit expiration issues as he is also unable to secure a ticket to Turkey. His work permit renewal will take no less than to two weeks as well. Lumor Agbenyenu is also dealing with the same challenges.

Mohammed Kudus might as well not be available after picking up an injury during club training last week hence sidelined during Ajax’s 1-0 loss to Groningen on Sunday. Although Mohammed’s fitness is in doubt, the GFA insists he travels to Turkey on Tuesday, October 6 for a medical assessment.

Amidst these disappointing circumstances, Black Stars coach C.K Akonnor has reacted abruptly by handing out call ups to Trabzonspor striker Caleb Ekuban and Ankaragucu winger Joseph Paintsil, both Turkey-based replacements. These players will replace John Antwi and Lumor Agbenyenu respectively. In the case of Richard Ofori, Coach Akonnor still has two goalkeepers available to choose from; Richard Ati Zigi and Razak Abalora.

The team will then face off with 2022 world cup hosts; Qatar, three(3) days after their friendly match against Mali. Both games will be held in Antalya-Turkey.

Ghana currently sits comfortably on top of the Group F table with 6 points after victories over South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe in November 2019.

The full squad to expect next week, October 09 are;

Goalkeepers: Richard Ati Zigi (St. Gallen), Razak Abalora (Unattached)

Full Backs: Benson Anang (Zilina FC), Yakubu Mohammed (Azam FC), Gideon Mensah (Vitoria de Guimaraes)

Center Backs: Alexander Djiku (Strasbourg), JosephAidoo (Celta de Vigo), Nicholas Opoku (Amiens), Kassim Nuhu (Hoffenheim)

Midfielders: Thomas Partey (Atletico Madrid), Emmanuel Lomotey (Amiens), Bernard Mensah (Besiktas), Baba Idrisu (RCD Mallorca)

SEC Boss: All depositors affected by Banking cleanup will be paid

0

Reverend Daniel Ogbarmey Tetteh, the Director-General of the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), has assured that government will settle the claims of all affected depositors in the recent cleanup exercise of the financial investment sector.

According to the SEC boss, out of the 53 affected firms, his outfit has been able to access fully the records of 40 and is working to access the records of a further 7 in order to take them through the liquidation process. He said so far, liquidation orders have been granted to 22 fund managers and processes are in place to pay depositors their investment.

“As at the end of July when the legal vacation kicked in, the court had granted the official liquidator 22 liquidation orders and we also had full access to the records of 40 out of 47 of the firms because three did not have any claims filed and we did say that there is a government bailout and it will be rolled out in phases. So the phase one will be the firms that the court had granted the liquidation order. Government bailout is for all affected investors and not for only those that liquidation orders have been granted at the time. So that clarity has to be there and it is just a question of time,” Rev Ogbarmey Tetteh said.

In November last year, the SEC revoked the licenses of 53 fund managers for failing to settle investors claims due to liquidity challenges while some were indicted for not operating in conformity with the industry’s best practices.

This followed discussions with government and subsequently the appointment of the Registrar General as official liquidator to see to it that depositors whose funds were locked up in the cleanup exercise were duly paid the money they invested in these fund managers.

Speaking in an interview on an Accra-based TV station, the SEC boss, however, explained that the liquidation process so far has gone smoothly. He said the only hitch that has slowed the process is the legal vacation and once the courts resume, more liquidation orders will be granted.

“We have explained that the bailout is rolled out after two conditions are fulfilled. When your claims are validated and when the liquidation order has been granted. The legal vacation has been on and ended in October this week that is essential when the courts resumes. So we are expecting that we will be getting some more of the liquidation orders granted because they were at various stages before the legal vacation hit. So in terms of liquidation orders, there is nothing new that we can report as I speak,” he added.
