President Akufo-Addo: Ghana’s economy recovering from coronavirus than anticipated

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said the Ghanaian economy has begun to recover faster from the novel Coronavirus than “initially anticipated”.

This, President Akufo-Addo indicated, is according to the Bank of Ghana’s assessment on Ghana’s economy.

President Akufo-Addo, delivering his 18th address to the nation on Sunday, October 18, stated that “consumer confidence is bouncing back strongly, and is today above pre-lockdown levels”.

“Business confidence has also increased, reflecting the improving macroeconomic conditions, stability in the exchange rate, lower input prices, moderation in lending rates, and positive industry prospects.

“Consumer spending, industrial consumption of electricity and construction activities have all reached pre-lockdown levels, whilst tourist arrivals and port harbour activity are gradually edging upwards,” Akufo-Addo noted.

However, President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to continue to comply with the strict hygiene, mask-wearing and social distancing protocols that have become part.

“This is the surest way by which we can defeat the virus, and avoid a second wave of infections,” he observed.

Asamoah Gyan issues apology after alleged Tennis Court assault incident

0

Former Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan has denied an assault allegation levelled against him by a member of the public.

This follows the widely publicised assault case involving him that has made headlines in Ghana over the past 24 hours.

Below is the full statement by Asamoah Gyan issued earlier on Thursday.

Alleged Assault Incident 15.10.20

My attention has been drawn to an audio recording that has been circulating on social media, radio and on TV news alleging that I attacked my opponent during a tennis exhibition match at the 37 Army Officers Mess Tennis Courts in Accra.

Even though the audio captures heated verbal exchanges in which my voice, the voice of my brother Baffour Gyan and the accuser can be heard, the narrative that has followed is very  misleading.

However, I wish to sincerely apologize to my fans, sympathizers and all Ghanaians for any inappropriate use of language during the said incident.

I wish to state here and now that I did not physically attack the said person in the audio but rather had heated verbal exchanges with him.

Regardless of any provocation, I concede that I over reacted and I am sorry for such an outburst.

I assure all and sundry that l will continue to put myself at the service of my country through sports and humanitarian activities as I have been doing for all these years.

I am grateful for all the advice; those who have sent me messages of constructive criticism and also messages of support from the public and my family.

I wish to appeal to the media to also exercise patience for all the facts  surrounding the incident to be brought to light.

Thank you.

President Akufo-Addo: Past credit pension payments of 2020 public sector retirees will be paid

0

An assurance has been given to the public sector workers by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that the government will resolve the issue of ‘Past Credit’ for public sector workers who retire from January 2020.

President Akufo-Addo said “Government, through SSNIT, would pay the difference in the lump sum payments, between beneficiaries of PNDC Law 247 and those of Act 766, for those retiring in 2020, with effect from 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2020.”

This was made known by the President on Tuesday, 13th October 2020, when he commissioned the refurbished Hall of Trade Unions of the Trades Union Congress in Accra.

According to President Akufo-Addo, contents of a letter dated 24th August 2020, sent to him by the Secretary-General, on behalf of the TUC, requested his intervention to “correct the injustice and unfairness in the implementation of the three-tier pension system”.

President Akufo-Addo told the gathering that he referred this matter to the Senior Minister, Hon. Yaw Osafo Maafo, who, after careful studies and deliberations, has laid out the position of Government in this matter.

Indeed, 2020 marks the transition year where all public sector workers, retiring under the Three-Tier Pension Scheme, are having their pensions paid under the National Pensions Act, 2008, Act 766.

Even though Act 766 clearly offers higher monthly pensions and better lifetime benefits to workers compared to the erstwhile PNDC Law 247, some workers may receive a lower lump sum (made up of the past credit paid by SSNIT and the Tier-2) compared to that paid under PNDCL 247), with the President adding that “a Committee will be established to supervise the implementation of this decision” to ensure that equity prevails and no pensioner is made worse off.

President Akufo-Addo, touching on the refurbishment, stated that in the run-up to the December 2016 elections, as part of several stakeholder engagements he held, he was at the Hall of Trade Unions, where he interacted with the leadership of the TUC, and outlined his vision for the transformation of the country, if he was elected President of the Republic.
He said “Indeed, the state of the Hall of Trade Unions, at the time of my visit in 2016, and in the early years of my administration, would have made the likes of Pobee Biney, Vidal Quist and their successors very sad.”

Recognising and appreciating the efforts and sacrifices the TUC has made towards the construction of the happy and prosperous Ghana we seek, he stated that “that is why when Government received the request from the leadership of the TUC to assist it refurbish the Hall, we did not hesitate. I have been told by the Minister for Finance that Government’s contribution to this refurbishment was twelve million, seven hundred thousand cedis (GH¢12.7 million)”.

This refurbished Hall, he explained, is a fitting and proper tribute to the memory and work of the leadership of the TUC of yesteryear and today, leaders such as Joe-Fio Meyer, John Tettegah, B.A Bentum, A.M Issifu, A.K. Yankey, Christian Appiah Agyei, Kwasi Adu Amankwah and Kofi Asamoah.

“I am glad to state that the relationship between Government and Organised Labour has been one of cordiality, co-operation and mutual respect. I continue to be reassured by the determination of Organised Labour and its leadership to rally behind Government to create a progressive nation, buoyed on by faster economic growth rates, and driven by the quest for decent jobs,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo further said “I have been heartened by this, and I am determined, for as long as I remain President of the Republic, to continue even more firmly on this path of co-operation and collaboration on which we have embarked to the benefit of the working people of our country”.

John Mahama: NDC will streamline the fishing sector to ensure growth

0

On Wednesday, Mr John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said the next NDC government will streamline the fishing sector to benefit fishermen and other stakeholders in the industry.

Mr Mahama, addressing fishermen at Gomoa Nyanyano in the Gomoa East constituency on the first day of his five-day tour of the Central Region, observed that fishing inputs, including the distribution of fishing nets and premix fuel, have been hijacked by supporters of the ruling party following the government’s Politicisation of the sector.

According to Mr Mahama, in order to help promote the growth of the fisheries sector, the next NDC government will ensure that fishermen take charge of the distribution of premix fuel by forming landing beach committees.

Mr Mahama said “fishing nets and outboard motors will also be supplied to fishermen at a very affordable price”.

He further said the next NDC government will establish a salt factory at Gomoa Nyanyano to create jobs for the unemployed youth in the area.

Mr Mahama also mentioned that the abandoned road network in the constituency will be constructed by the next NDC government.

He therefore urged electorates to vote for him and NDC parliamentary candidates in the December 7 general elections to enable him roll out Free Primary Healthcare for all, provide jobs as well as state-sponsored National Apprenticeship Programme, among others.

Google reveals Mineral crop-inspecting prototype robots

0

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has unveiled prototype robots that can inspect individual plants in a field, to help farmers improve crop yields.

The robot buggies roll through fields on upright pillars, so they can coast over plants without disturbing them.

The goal is to collect huge amounts of data about how crops grow.

Called Project Mineral, it is part of Alphabet’s X company, which aims to create world-changing technology from radical “moonshot” ideas.

In a blog post, project lead Elliott Grant said: “We hope that better tools will enable the agriculture industry to transform how food is grown”.

The team says its main goal is to address the world’s increasing need for food and the sustainability of growing it.

But current tools do not give farmers the kind of information they need.

“What if every single plant could be monitored and given exactly the nutrition it needed?” Mr Grant wrote.

“What if we could untangle the genetic and environmental drivers of crop yield?”

While farmers may have information about the soil content or the weather, the buggy robot was designed to see how plants were “actually growing and responding to their environment”, the company said.

“Over the past few years, the plant buggy has trundled through strawberry fields in California and soybean fields in Illinois, gathering high quality images of each plant and counting and classifying every berry and every bean,” it said.

On top of being a literal bean-counter, the buggy can also record information such as plant height, leaf area and fruit size.

And all that data is plugged into a machine-learning system to try to spot patterns and insights useful to farmers.

Ian Drew, a technology company founder and chairman – and sheep farmer – said: “Putting robots in fields makes an awful lot of sense.”

Checking for bugs, making sure crops were picked and planted at the right time and even picking weeds or moving fences were possibilities, he said.

“Having robots is really efficient and effective,” Mr Drew said.

“Farmers are marginal most of the time.

“And so 1%, 2%, 5% efficiency is a huge gain for them – and anything that can do that for them will be taken up in the right way.”

“But there are some downsides to all of this.”

Data security was essential at every step, he said, “because the last thing you want to do is have somebody hijack your farm”.

And the question of who owned the data was important.

“This big data is really important – and governments will want to have a say and control over how that is used and who gets to see it – because it is of national interest.”

Mineral said it was already working with breeders and farmers in Argentina, Canada, South Africa, and the United States.

But there is no explicit timeline or plan to release the buggy as a commercial product.

0

The newly signed Arsenal player, Thomas Partey, has said he had sleepless nights when his agent told him that his move to Arsenal was going to happen.

Partey, speaking to Arsenal.com, said, “until the last moment I was not aware. My agent called me and said it was going to happen and I was so happy. I could not even sleep that night. It was a great feeling.”

According to Thomas Partey, he was so happy and excited about the way Arsenal fans were sending him messages on his social media handles when it was announced that he was going to join the London club.

An excited Thomas Partey said “I received a lot of messages saying join the club or we are not sleeping!”

StoneBwoy: Contesting elections as an independent candidate is a waste of time

0

Stonebwoy, the Ghanaian dancehall artist, has said that he will not contest for a public office as an independent candidate knowing how fruitless such a venture is.

According to Stonebwoy, even though he doesn’t see himself getting into partisan politics, he sees it better for any person seeking to enter into politics to join a political party with what they have to offer instead of being a stand-alone political person.

“If I may have to assume a political position to serve the people it will be difficult because there is a divide. I think I understand my space enough to know that being an independent candidate is somewhat a waste of time. Sorry, not to disrespect any independent candidate but I am speaking for myself, if there are two ships going, at least join one ship and then add what you want to add. My opinion might sound someway and you might think being an independent candidate will survive, but in this Ghana, here that we are and I have to say the truth, you have to be a part of the foundations that have already been built in order to do yours,” Stonebwoy said.

Speaking on an Accra-based TV station, he stated that owing to the sentiments that characterise politics in the country, he will not join a political party.

Stonebwoy who has always advocated for citizens to nonetheless exercise their constitutional rights to vote, said he will cast his ballot come December 7, when Ghana goes to the polls.

He emphasised that there is the need for Ghanaian voters to pay close attention to policies and ideals in settling on a choice which will inure to their development and that of the nation at large.

EU: ‘There’s no evidence of money laundering in Ghana’

0

The European Union (EU) has said there is no evidence of money laundering in Ghana following the blacklisting of Ghana by the Union in May 2020.

Ambassador Diana Acconcia, the Head of Delegation of the EU to Ghana, has explained that Ghana has been blacklisted because it failed to put some checks in place to forestall money laundering.

The Head of Delegation of the EU to Ghana, speaking on an Accra-based Radio station Monday said “There is no evidence of money laundering in Ghana,”.

Also reacting to reports on the directive by the ING Bank in Belgium for Ghana’s embassy there to close its accounts with the bank, Ambassador Acconcia said “The fact that the account of the Embassy of Ghana in Belgium and the European Union has been closed by a Belgium Bank, that was a business decision taken by the bank. The bank was not at all obliged by the EU to close the account of the Embassy.”

She added: “It was a business decision to apply more checks to the Embassy. The listing does not affect trade, development aid and there will be no problem in paying the budgetary support and the main projects we have in Ghana…. Ghana is doing a lot already because there is the Financial Intelligence Center at the Central Bank among others to check some of these things.”

Background

Ghana’s Embassy in Belgium capital Brussels, has been ordered by its banker to withdraw all its money so that the bank will proceed to close the embassy’s accounts.

The ING Bank has not given basis for the decision but says it is irreversible. The embassy has up to November 12, 2020, to withdraw all its money to another bank.

Ghana’s Mission in Brussels has four accounts with the bank. They are:

  1. Main Euro Account, a current account,
  2. Main Euro Account, a business account,
  3. Special collections account,
  4. Retention Fund account, which is used for the internally generated funds of the embassy.
