EC: About 30,000 people disqualified from voting on Dec 7

0

According to the Electoral Commission (EC), about 30,000 out of the over 16 million people who took part in the voter registration exercise have been disqualified.

Dr Eric Bossman Asare, the Deputy EC Commissioner in charge of Corporate Services, said about 14,000 of the 30,000 disqualified voters have been put on the Exceptions List while about 16,000 names have been put on the Multiple List.

A name is put on the Exceptions List after it has been excluded from the Provisional Register on grounds of disqualification – registration outside the stipulated time.

Also, the Multiple Registration List contains the names and photographs of persons who have registered more than once.

Dr Bossman Asare said “They cannot vote because they had engaged in infractions.”

The revelation was made by Dr Asare when he spoke on a current affairs programme on an Accra-based TV station on Sunday, October 25, 2020.

He said the disqualification of these 30,000 people went through a legal process, presided over by a judge, after their eligibility was challenged – a point he made to explain that the removal of the names from the provisional voters’ register followed due process.

He said although a few issues cropped up during the voters registration exercise, the EC has been able to make sure that every Ghanaian who registered in the just ended exercise would be able to vote on December 7.

“Your details are intact. Your biometric details – fingerprint, facial recognition – all of them are intact. So, the Commission is assuring all the good people of this country. Once you took part in the registration, your details are intact. You are part of the 17 million or so people,” he stressed.

“This facility though primarily constructed for the Zongo Community is for the use of everyone. We need to maintain it to the highest standards. You can rent the facility for both Christian and Islamic programs provided you pay for the usage of the facility.”

Fritz Baffour to politicians: The politics of insults is too much in Ghana

0

Fritz Baffour, the Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South constituency, has urged politicians to put a stop to the verbal abuse in their talk to power during campaigns.

According to Fritz Baffour, who successfully served two terms of office as an MP, politicians must find a neutral ground to fight for the common good of the country.

Fritz Baffour, speaking in an interview on October 16, 2020 with Heavy Dee, host of KETEKE, on Max 89.7 FM in Accra, stressed that people must be given the chance to express themselves without being accused of any political affiliations.

The former movie actor further called on politicians to form a consensus to deliberate on issues which will benefit the country irrespective of political affiliations.

Some political figures, in the lead up to the December 7 elections, have been at loggerheads with each other engaging in verbal attacks, however, the former MP thinks its high time politicians do away with such style.

“I believe we need a new conversation in Ghana that will unite us, I think the insults are too much,” Fritz Baffour said.

He added, “I think it’s time we had a consensus because all our ethnic groups have thrived on their traditions, have thrived on consensus, sitting down together and coming up for the good of the country.”

Asked by Heavy Dee if he would return to active politics, Fritz Baffour said, “I have no intentions of going back into active politics. I’m a member of a political party and I think that we politicize too much, it hurts because sometimes you have an opinion which is apolitical but because you’ve said it then it connected to a political party.”

Fritz Baffour was the Minister for Information during the Atta-Mills Administration.

Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has opened up about his missed penalty in the 2010 FIFA World Cup for Ghana Vs Uruguay

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nana Darkwa Gyasi, host of Sports Pack 1 on Max 89.7 FM, Tuesday 21st October ,2020, Asamoah Gyan revealed that it still hurts him and sometimes haunts him when he is alone.

“There are more crucial penalties, most of them were taken by me. It is not my biggest regret. Why should it be my biggest regret? It was something that went wrong so definitely people will have their own opinion,” Asamoah Gyan said.

Reminiscing about his crucial penalty miss in Ghana’s 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter final clash Vs Uruguay, Asamoah Gyan said he would prefer to forget about it.

“However, me personally it hurts me but I sometimes become philosophical with it and say to myself it’s just football,” he continued.

Gyan, further said “I regret missing the penalty because I would have made history for Ghana. Sometimes it haunts me, especially when I am alone it haunts me. My mind replays the event and I end up wishing God would rewind time. However, it is not something that will happen again.”

The handball prevented Dominic Adiyiah from scoring the winner for the African nation. In came Gyan, his country’s talisman to take the penalty. The former Sunderland man’s penalty went straight towards the crossbar, out of Fernando Muslera’s reach.

NSA withdraws proposed user fees for Accra Sports Stadium by GPL clubs.

0

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has withdrawn recent fees it proposed to charge for the usage of the Accra Sports Stadium for home games by Ghana Premier League clubs.

This is as a result of a backlash by clubs and the rapid intervention by Ghana FA boss Kurt Okraku as he reacted to a release by the NSA in a post on social media.

According to Mr Okraku, the 20,000 and 15,000 cedis to be paid by category B and C clubs respectively during each home game at the Accra Sports Stadium are excessive figures which will affect the financial capacity of football clubs and promised to meet the NSA to find a way out.

NSA has released a statement on Wednesday suspending their earlier statement.

Speaking to freelance sports journalist Dennis Mensah, the NSA PRO Mr Charles confirmed;

“… yes, and we have rescheduled the meeting for another day and the clubs and general public will soon be informed about the latest development.”

This development is a big relief for the five clubs including Hearts of oak, Asante Kotoko, Inter Allies, Great Olympics and Legon cities who have adopted the Accra sports stadium as their home grounds.

Meanwhile, the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season is due to start on 13th November 2020.

Violence cannot be the solution – President Akufo-Addo finally speaks on #EndSARS protests

0

President of the republic of Ghana, President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, has sent a message of solidarity to the people of Nigeria following clashes between security forces and citizens over protests against police brutality.

President Akufo-Addo, in a tweet on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, urged for calm in Nigeria and added that violence, be it on the part of the Police or protesters, cannot be the solution.

The tweet by President Akufo-Addo read “I join all well-meaning persons in calling for calm, and the use of dialogue in resolving the #EndSARS impasse in Nigeria. I have spoken with President Buhari, who is committed to this end, and has begun the processes that will lead to reform.”

“Violence, be it on the part of the Police or protesters, cannot be the solution. To the families who have lost their loved ones, I express my sincere condolences, and I wish the injured a speedy recovery,” it added.

Pressure has mounted on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who serves as the Chairperson of ECOWAS, for the past few days, to speak out on the ongoing #EndSars and #EndPolicebrutality protests after force was reportedly used against the protestors.

According to several reports, protestors had been killed in Lagos on Wednesday night, scaling up not just the disaffection against the Nigeria government but the silence of Ghana’s president who is also Chairperson of the West Africa sub-regional body ECOWAS.

Several Nigerians and Ghanaians including high profile musicians, broadcasters and actors have taken to Twitter to express their misgivings over Mr Akufo-Addo’s long silence on the issues happening in the oil-producing West African nation.

LET THE CITIZEN KNOW

19TH OCTOBER 2020

ADDRESS DELEIVERED BY MRS. JEAN MENSA,

CHAIRPERSON OF THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION,

ON DECLARATION OF RESULTS FROM THE FILING OF NOMINATIONS

BY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES

FOR THE 2020 ELECTIONS

ON MONDAY THE 19TH OF OCTOBER, 2020 AT 4:00 PM

Good afternoon citizens of Ghana and our friends from the media. We thank the good Lord for this day. His Grace and Mercy has brought us this far and will lead us to peaceful, credible, transparent and fair elections December, 2020 in Jesus’ mighty Name.

On behalf of the Commission, I welcome you to today’s Let the Citizen Know. Today’s encounter is aimed at updating the public on the just ended Filing of Nominations by Presidential Aspirants who wish to contest the December 7th 2020 Elections.

As I emphasized during the weeklong process this is one of the most critical activities in the lead up to the December 2020 Elections, without which, the Commission cannot run the Elections.

As a result we designated Monday 5th October, 2020 to Friday 9th October, 2020, for this important process. We thank all our Stakeholders for their cooperation with the Electoral Commission. It is worth noting that most of the Candidates who filed their nominations presented themselves in a courteous and civil manner. In a nutshell, we achieved our objective of ensuring a peaceful, seamless and productive exercise.

It has been this Commission’s resolve to provide regular and comprehensive updates at every stage of the electoral process. Therefore having completed the process of receiving, reviewing and scrutinizing the Nomination Forms and documents from Presidential Aspirants allow me to update you accordingly.

Set up and Conduct of the Nomination Filing Process in 2020

To enhance and ensure a transparent, credible, fair, peaceful and yet accountable electoral process and election in 2020, the Commission continues to develop innovations to ensure that we carry Citizens along in all our processes. This transparency was evident throughout the Registration and Exhibition Exercises and indeed throughout the week-long Nomination process. As a Commission, we intend to be open and transparent in all our processes and keep you our distinguished stakeholders informed in a timely manner as we inch towards December, 2020.

This year, the Commission made the Nomination Forms to Aspiring Presidential and Parliamentary Candidates available online. This helped ease the burden of travelling to the Commission to pick up the Forms and eliminated over-crowding at the Commission’s offices, thereby curbing the spread of the COVID 19 virus.

The Commission also developed a detailed Checklist that embodied the criteria to be satisfied by Presidential Candidates as prescribed by law. This template guided the scoring and awarding of marks by Teams established by the Commission to review the Nomination Forms submitted.

Moreover, four (4) weeks in advance Nomination Forms were made available on our website. Each Political Party or designated representative was given a unique code to access the Nomination Forms. This eliminated the incidence of different Candidates of the same Political Party filing nominations for the same position.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This year, the Commission set up two (2) Teams which were tasked to review all the Forms submitted.

The technical team scrutinised the Forms submitted to ensure that Aspirants satisfied the qualifications as set out in the law such as the; age requirements, the fulfilment of tax obligations among others etc.

We are confident that both Teams have been thorough and yet fair in their work

Yet another welcome innovation was the five (5)-day period provided for the filing process as opposed to the two (2) days provided in previous nomination processes. This allowed enough time for Aspirants to correct any errors identified in their Forms.

All in all these innovations helped eliminate the confusion and tension that characterised previous nomination processes.

Filing of Nomination Forms by Presidential Aspirants

As noted in our last Let The Citizen Know Seventeen (17) Presidential Aspirants filed their nominations to contest the December 7, Presidential Election.

The Commission is happy to note that for the first time in our nation’s history, three (3) women put themselves up for nomination for the position of Presidential Candidate. This is a testament to the growth of our democratic space.

Now to the reason why we are here. At the end of a thorough review process, I have the honour to present to you the Presidential Candidates who have qualified to contest the 2020 Presidential Elections.

President Akufo-Addo: Academic year for university students starts from January 2021

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, following the closure of schools as part of measures the government of Ghana has put in place to combat the spread of the novel Coronavirus in the country, has indicated that the new academic year for both new and continuing university students starts from January 2021.

In his 18th address to the nation since Ghana recorded the first two cases of the novel Coronavirus, President Akufo-Addo said, “SHS 2 and JHS 2 students are back in school, as are some students in tertiary institutions and colleges.

“Indeed, the academic year for new and continuing University students will commence from January 2021.”

To him, the decision comes out of “the strategic, controlled, progressive, safe easing of restrictions…, with its overarching objective being to restore our lives and economy back to normal.”

Ghana’s educational institutions were subsequently reopened in phases for final year students to complete their academic as well as continuing students to complete the academic year.
