The UK government has threatened to sue former Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich over the sale of the club to ensure all proceeds are sent to Ukraine.
All the assets belonging to the Russian oligarch Abramovich, have been frozen in the UK, including his £2.6bn proceeds from the sale of the most successful London club in Europe.
Sanctioned by the UK government for his involvement with Russian president Vladimir Putin and the Ukraine invasion in 2020, which has resulted in loss of many lives and damages to Ukrainian cities.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy said, “The government is determined to see the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club reach humanitarian causes in Ukraine, following Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion.
“We are deeply frustrated that it has not been possible to reach agreement on this with Mr Abramovich so far”.
Abramovich, however, wants the money to go straight to the affected Ukrainian families instead of the Ukrainian government, but the UK government deems it best to be used for humanitarian purposes.
