Chelsea’s pursuit of Moises Caicedo was successfully foiled by Liverpool, who overnight reached an agreement with the Brighton midfielder for a British record $110 million.
The Seagulls were steadfast in their valuation of Caicedo over the summer and rejected numerous of Chelsea’s attempts before setting a deadline of Thursday at midnight for a club auction.
The asking price, which was set at £105 million based on Declan Rice’s signing earlier this summer, was surpassed by Liverpool. Tony Bloom would not have agreed to sell for less than that price.
Although personal terms have not yet been decided, they should only be a formality. Last night, Caicedo and his agent were in west London watching the bidding war unfold.
Liverpool will probably give Caicedo a higher salary than Chelsea offered.
