A judge in Argentina has recused herself from the trial of Diego Maradona’s medical team after facing backlash for appearing in a documentary about the case.
Seven medical professionals are charged with negligent homicide over Maradona’s 2020 death. They deny the allegations. Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari accused Judge Julieta Makintach of acting “like an actress and not a judge.”
Makintach was one of three judges overseeing the high-profile case, which is now adjourned. A decision on whether to restart the trial is expected Thursday.
Maradona died of a heart attack at age 60 while recovering at home in Buenos Aires from brain surgery. Prosecutors argue his death was preventable and blame “reckless and deficient” care.
The defendants include a neurosurgeon, doctor, and nurse. They claim Maradona refused additional treatment and should have remained under home care longer.
If found guilty, they face 8 to 25 years in prison. The trial, which began in March and was due to run until July, is now in limbo.
Judge Makintach said she had “no choice” but to withdraw.
