Music producer Kilo Beats has disclosed that Ghanaian musicians are not gaining bigger gigs due to their inability to play any instruments.
According to him, organizers of big concerts look for authenticity, and the current local musicians are rather doing foreign genres without blending any authentic instruments in their composition.
That, he noted, had swayed many foreign organizers from engaging Ghanaian artistes to perform on big platforms or shows.
Speaking in an interview with Max Drive in Accra on Tuesday, Kilo Beats indicated that the highlife music being done in the country lacked strength and those who wanted to strengthen it did not gain the needed support.
“Kumi Guitar started doing it, but he did not get enough support, so he relaxed. Though he is still in the industry, he is not doing much. Kofi Kinaata is also doing it, but I don’t know whether he knows how to play an instrument; that (instrument) is where the strength is,” he said.
Kilo Beats observed that musicians from Ivory Coast and other countries were breaking boundaries with the playing of guitar, something Ghanaian musicians lacked.
“Ghanaian musicians cannot do that (play an instrument like the guitar); in fact, most of them lacked that capacity, so they are losing bigger gigs,” he noted.
In filling the loopholes, Kilo Beats said he learned how to play acoustic guitar in addition to the piano and drums, which he acquired through his sound engineering skills in his bid to teach foreign students who are learning music how to blend their hip-hop and R&B with Ghanaian highlife.
