The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has warned the public against the unauthorized transfer of electricity meters, calling the act illegal and punishable by law.
According to ECG, all meters are registered to specific locations and cannot be moved without formal approval. Unauthorized transfers can disrupt billing, affect service delivery, and lead to legal consequences.
Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, ECG’s General Manager for External Communications, explained that meter transfers are strictly regulated and only allowed in limited cases.
“A meter issued by ECG is tied to a specific location, especially in permanent structures like homes. It cannot be transferred,” he noted.
However, he added that transfers are permitted for movable structures such as kiosks or containers—and only within the same ECG district. These must be handled by authorised ECG personnel after an official request.
Dr Ayiku warned that customers who relocate meters without approval risk criminal prosecution and urged the public to report any suspicious activity through ECG’s district offices or official channels.
He concluded by encouraging customers to cooperate with ECG to ensure safe and efficient power supply.
