GOC President Rejects Athletes’ Money Demands

Date:

President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, refuted recent claims suggesting Ghanaian athletes in Strasbourg, France, were demanding money. Speaking with Kwabena Yeboah on GTV Sports+, Nunoo Mensah clarified:

“This morning, I saw the report in Graphic Sports, and I want to emphasize that it is completely untrue. There has been no discussion whatsoever about money, per diem, or bonuses among our athletes. Their sole focus is on training, and I urge all Ghanaians to support them and maintain their focus.”

Regarding the alleged report, he added, “I’m not sure where Graphic got their information, but I can confirm it did not come from any of our athletes or officials. I have personally spoken with the Chef de Mission, the team captain, and several athletes, and none of them have raised any concerns about finances.”

When asked about per diems, bonuses, and potential winnings, Nunoo Mensah assured, “There has been no issue in our camp regarding these matters. All payments due to our athletes will be made as planned, allowing them to concentrate entirely on their preparations.”

He continued, “During our meetings, the focus has always been on performance and preparation. The athletes understand that per diems will be provided, and bonuses will be awarded to those who excel and win medals. Our communication channels are open, and if there were any concerns, athletes know they can approach me directly.”

Nunoo Mensah concluded, “I have a good relationship with everyone in camp, and there is no doubt that the government will fulfill its financial obligations at the appropriate time. Mr. Barnor, our purse holder, will soon depart for Paris, ensuring all necessary payments are processed smoothly.”

The President emphasized that claims of financial disputes among Ghanaian athletes are unfounded, reaffirming their commitment to training and readiness for the upcoming Games.
