Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Minister nominee for the Ashanti Region, stated that schools in Obuasi will reopen once peace is fully restored. This follows violent clashes between illegal miners and military personnel at the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, which resulted in nine deaths.
As a precaution, both public and private schools in the area have been temporarily closed for safety reasons.
Although security has been increased, local authorities have decided to keep schools closed until the situation stabilizes. Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized that the reopening of schools depends on the restoration of peace and security in Obuasi. He reassured the public that the government is collaborating with local stakeholders to resolve the situation and ensure the safety of residents.
Dr. Amoakohene expressed confidence that continued engagement would bring peace back to the area, allowing schools and normal activities to resume. “We cannot keep schools closed indefinitely. The safety and well-being of our students are our top priority,” he said. “Once we are certain peace has been restored, we will reopen the schools and return to normalcy.”
