Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has responded to President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to investigate deaths linked to the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
Sources from Joy News report that a special investigative team has been formed at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters, with specific timelines for delivering a comprehensive report.
The team, led by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe, consists of experienced officers from the Ghana Police Service. Dr. Dampare assured President Mahama in his letter that all necessary resources would be provided to support the team in its investigation.
This investigation builds on efforts already underway under Dr. Dampare’s leadership since he assumed office in 2021, including the establishment of the Cold Case Unit at the CID headquarters.
This unit has been investigating deaths related to the 2020 elections, with significant progress made, including prosecutions of suspects involved.
President Mahama’s letter, dated January 10, 2025, requested a thorough investigation into the fatalities from both the 2020 and 2024 elections.
