PARIS 2024 PRESSER: GOC President urges increased Sports Investment ahead of Olympics

Date:

President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah, has urged Corporate Ghana and individuals to invest in athletes to enhance their performance at international competitions representing the nation.

Expressing concern over athletes preparing without sufficient support ahead of major events, Mr. Mensah remains optimistic about Ghana’s prospects in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, with 21 representatives in Track & Field and Swimming.

Acknowledging support from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the French Embassy, and other partners, the GOC has secured a $31,000 budget for pre-Games preparations. Mr. Mensah hopes for additional backing from the Ministry of Youth & Sports and the government.

He anticipates that Ghana’s athletes will surpass their achievements at Tokyo 2020, where the nation secured a bronze medal in boxing.

Aboagye Duah, Ghana Tennis President and the contingent leader, is currently in France awaiting the team’s arrival in Strasbourg before moving to the Paris Games Village on July 21.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games commence on July 26, and Mr. Mensah expects Team Ghana to excel.

Representatives from the French Embassy, including Madam Marine Hayem and Mr. Emmanuel Annor, along with supporters like Madam Sarah Agyei of Horseman Shoes, Mr. Kwab Asamoah of Kustom Looks, and Mr. Eworyi Worlanyo of Republic Bank, have shown their support. They presented specially designed shoes, branded kits, and financial contributions to the GOC.

Madam Sarah Agyei expressed her company’s pride in supporting the GOC and the Paris Games, while Mr. Kwab Asamoah highlighted the opportunity for Ghanaian products to be showcased at the Games.

Mrs. Delphina Quaye, President of Ghana Swimming, unveiled the traditional wear for the opening and closing ceremonies and presented special pins to sponsoring companies.

The event was attended by GOC Board members Mr. Mawuko Afadzinu, Mrs. Delphina Quaye, Mr. Albert K. Frimpong, Mr. Michael Aggrey, Rev E.D. Nikoi, and Mr. George Lamptey, as well as the GOC Communications Team.
