The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a consignment of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs, with an estimated value of GH¢11.2 million, at Akatsi in the Volta Region.

A highly placed source at the Customs Head Office in Accra told The Chronicle that the seizure followed an intelligence-led operation.

During the operation, the occupants of a Toyota Lexus allegedly being used to transport the suspected cannabis abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

The source disclosed that the vehicle was bearing a fake Ghanaian registration number, making it difficult for investigators to establish its true ownership.

The seizure adds to ongoing efforts by Customs and other security agencies to curb the trafficking of illicit drugs into and out of the country.

In October 2025, Customs, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), intercepted 84 bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp concealed in a shipment at one of Ghana’s entry points.

The operation formed part of broader inter-agency efforts to disrupt the movement of prohibited substances through intelligence gathering and cooperation among security agencies.

The latest interception at Akatsi highlights the role of intelligence-led operations in identifying and disrupting the transportation of suspected narcotics.
Further details on the investigation into the latest seizure, including efforts to identify the occupants of the abandoned vehicle, were not provided by the source.
