The Black Maidens of Ghana are determined to turn tides in their favour at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Maidens suffered a demoralising 3-0 tournament opening defeat to Norway, who had failed to score throughout their last campaign.
Three moments of individual brilliance decided the course of the match as fans called for Ghana’s head coach, Joe Nana Adarkwa, to drop starting goalie Belinda Maku Aklie.
There’s a common feeling among fans that the height of Ghana’s goalkeeper is a huge disadvantage, as the Norwegians shot high balls to score their three unanswered goals.
Coach Nana Adarkwa, however, leapt to the defence of the young goalie, insisting she was no way at fault for the defeat. He even cited Aklie as the preferred number one for Ghana’s Black Princesses at their World Cup campaign in Poland in August.
On facing the Brazilians next in Group C of the World Cup, Ghana’s coach iterated that “it is not over until it is over,” exhibiting immense belief in his squad despite a stuttering start.
Brazil brushed aside Canada in the first match of Group C in Rabat, Morocco, coming from a goal down to end up winning 6-2.
Despite their dominant display, Coach Adarkwa, in an interview on Max TV’s Sports Pack show, asserted that his fearless Maidens aren’t perturbed by Brazil and are confident in producing an upset.
Ghana will be gunning for a favourable outcome against Brazil to stand a chance of reaching the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
