Nigeria’s Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal has upheld a $220 million fine against Meta Platforms for breaching local consumer protection, data privacy, and data security laws. The decision follows Meta’s unsuccessful appeal, the tribunal confirmed on Friday.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) imposed the fine on Meta in July 2024, citing discriminatory and exploitative practices against Nigerian consumers. According to the FCCPC, Meta treated Nigerian users unfairly compared to consumers in other jurisdictions with similar regulatory standards.
The case highlights increasing regulatory scrutiny over tech giants operating in Africa’s largest digital market.
