Azamati was Ghana’s best runner at Commonwealth Games— Osei Assibey

Date:

The Communications Director for the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr Charles Osei Assibey, defended the country’s performance at the just-ended 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Ghana finished 30th on the medal standings with two medals—one (1) silver and one (1) bronze won in the women’s parapowerlifting and men’s 55kg boxing, respectively.

In the African medal table, the country ranked six places behind Nigeria, which competed with 200 athletes compared to Ghana’s 44. Nigeria completed the Games with 7 medals.

While on Max FM’s Sports Pack show on Wednesday, the GOC CEO, who is also the president of Ghana’s Armwrestling Federation, lauded the results the country recorded.

Though not glorifying mediocrity, Mr Osei Assibey spoke highly of athletes such as 100m sprinter Benjamin Azamati despite him failing to win a medal with the 4x100m relay team or the individual 100m final.

His comments were met by the shocked host of the show, Nana Darkwa Gyasi, who revealed to the GOC mouthpiece that Azamati was mockingly labelled as the “heat champion”.

“Azamati comes into the Commonwealth Games, and he runs better than any Ghanaian,” said Mr Osei Assibey, continuing to stress the sprinter’s return from injury after missing the African Senior Athletics Championships in May this year.
