Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah has praised debutant players for their stellar performances during Ghana’s participation in the Unity Cup tournament in the UK.
The four-nation competition, held at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, saw Ghana finish third after a 4-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, despite losing their opener 2-1 to Nigeria.
With head coach Otto Addo handing debuts to five youngsters due to a reshuffled squad, the spotlight fell on FC Nordsjaelland’s Caleb Yirenkyi, Christopher Bonsu Baah, and Mohammed Gaddafi.
Mensah, speaking to Sporty FM, was full of admiration for their performance. “Caleb Yirenkyi did very well in the Unity Cup game. He wasn’t even playing in his natural position,” he said. “He was quiet in camp but came alive on the field. Then we have Christopher Bonsu Baah, Mohammed Gaddafi, and the other new boys who had a good game.”
The Gideon Mensah Unity Cup comments have drawn attention to Ghana’s depth of talent ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Black Stars are set to return in September for their crucial Matchday 7 and 8 fixtures against Chad and Mali.
