The Ministry of the Interior has announced that Friday, July 4, 2025, will be observed as the official public holiday in commemoration of Republic Day, which falls on Tuesday, July 1.
The decision, issued in a statement on Thursday, was made by President John Dramani Mahama through an Executive Instrument (E.I.) in line with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601).
“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, 4th July 2025, has been declared a Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement emphasized.
This update follows Parliament’s recent amendment to the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Bill on June 25, 2025. The amendment removes August 4 as Founders’ Day and reinstates September 21—the birthday of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah—as the official Founders’ Day.
Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, who announced the changes in Parliament, explained that the August 4 date had caused division among Ghanaians.
“We’ve taken out the 4th August… and we have maintained the 21st September… the birthday of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the founder of our country,” he stated.
As a result, July 1 is now fully recognized as Republic Day and will be celebrated nationwide with the public holiday observed on Friday, July 4 for convenience.
