Special Voting is currently taking place at designated polling stations across 14 of Ghana’s 16 regions, marking a critical step in the run-up to the December 7 general elections.
This initiative facilitates early voting for individuals with essential election-day duties, including electoral officials, security personnel, and media representatives.
The Electoral Commission (EC) reports that approximately 131,478 eligible voters—representing 0.007% of Ghana’s registered electorate of 18,741,159—are expected to participate in this exercise. However, voting in the Eastern and Western Regions has been postponed to December 5 due to a directive to recall and reprint ballot papers after a breach of security seals.
Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC, assured the public of the process’s credibility, transparency, and efficiency during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting. She emphasized the EC’s commitment to addressing concerns and ensuring a free and fair election.
Voting began at 7:00 a.m. and will close at 5:00 p.m. at the designated polling centres. Voters must present valid identification to cast their ballots. Unlike general election voting, ballots cast during the Special Voting exercise will be securely stored and counted on December 7 at the Constituency Collation Centres, with results integrated into the final election tally.
