Robyn Moodaly and her wife, Gabriela Salgado, became the first married couple to feature together in the same match at the 2026 WAFCON.
Although Banyana Banyana suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat, the match will be remembered for the unique achievement recorded by the two players.
Moodaly and Salgado were both named in South Africa’s squad for the encounter, making them the first married couple to play together in a WAFCON match since the competition began.
Their appearance marked a significant moment in African women’s football, as many question their inclusion, considering most African countries’ views on LGBT.
While South Africa endured a disappointing start to their campaign with the loss to Tanzania, the occasion provided a memorable off-the-pitch milestone that will remain part of WAFCON history.
