Music sampling has been a kind of style that many musicians have been a culprit of, however, talented highlife star, Kuami Eugene has been accused so many times of “stealing” songs of legendary singers.
Some critics describe the act as copyright infringement and stealing of others creative content without authorization, which to them must not be condoned.
In a recent interview, Kuami Eugene has explained that, song sampling did not amount to stealing but promote fondness of the song and improve the creative process.
“I don’t ‘steal’ music! Every artist takes influences from different places. There’s nothing wrong with taking a line or two and modifying it to fit my style. It’s a part of how we create music, and it’s something that professional musicians do all the time,” he said.
Citing Michael Jackson, Wizkid and Davido as example, Kuami Eugene indicated that those celebrated musicians do sampling and expressed worry about how some Ghanaians were tarnishing his image and making a farce about him sampling songs.
“I feel like many artists can get away with it, but for me, it’s like every time I release a hit that includes a line reminiscent of another artist’s work, I’m criticized.”
“It’s disheartening because I put a lot of effort into making my music original while drawing inspiration,” he lamented.
Kuami Eugene maintained that song sampling aid memories and made songs never lose its “sweetness,” adding that “at the end of the day, we’re all trying to create something beautiful that resonates with our audience.”
