JUST IN : UniMAC(GIJ) Names New Vice Chancellor

The Governing Council of the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC) has appointed Professor Eric Opoku Mensah as the substantive Vice-Chancellor, effective May 13, 2024.

He previously served as Acting Vice-Chancellor since February 8, 2024, succeeding the retired Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo.

UniMAC, established by an Act of Parliament (Act 1059), is Ghana’s first public university formed by merging the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL), and National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI).

According to a university release, Prof. Opoku Mensah brings visionary leadership and extensive expertise in higher education management to his new role. His academic background and leadership skills position him to lead UniMAC into a new era of excellence. He aims to enhance the student experience, expand infrastructure, promote research, and foster international collaborations.

Prof. Opoku Mensah expressed his commitment to driving positive change and progress at UniMAC, ensuring it remains at the forefront of media, arts, and communication education.

Prof. Opoku Mensah holds a BA and MPhil in English Language from the University of Cape Coast and a PhD in Rhetoric Studies from the University of Cape Town. His research focuses on Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s political communication and pan-African rhetoric. He has participated in numerous conferences and workshops and serves as a reviewer and external assessor for various academic bodies.

He has held administrative roles at the University of Cape Coast, GIJ, and UniMAC, and has been a visiting scholar at Uppsala University, Sweden. Prof. Opoku Mensah has received grants from several international organizations, including the Swedish Council for Higher Education and the Uppsala Forum for Democracy, Peace, and Justice.
