Security authorities in Hamile in the Upper West region have relocated immigration officers from their private residences to the Immigration Office following tensions with some residents in the wake of Tuesday’s dynamite explosion.
The decision follows meetings between security heads, a cross-section of traditional leaders and members of local committees to discuss concerns raised by the community over security operations in the area.
During the engagements, the youth reportedly made four key demands to the security authorities.
First, they requested permission to work alongside immigration officers at unapproved routes to help identify and report foreigners entering the area.
They also demanded that immigration officers currently staying in private residences leave those premises, warning that they could face attacks if they failed to comply.
Additionally, the youth called for all immigration officers stationed in Hamile to be withdrawn and replaced with new personnel. They further demanded the lifting of the curfew imposed following the explosion.
In response to the concerns, authorities have moved all immigration officers from their respective residences to the Immigration Office, where they will remain while security officials assess the situation and determine the next course of action.
Meanwhile, immigration officers, military personnel and police officers were briefed before deployment on the need to ensure residents comply with the curfew.
The security briefing was intended to guide the joint deployment and ensure enforcement of the restrictions as authorities continue to monitor developments in the community.
The engagements form part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to address tensions in Hamile and maintain calm following the explosion.
Authorities are expected to continue assessing the situation and engage community leaders as they determine the way forward.
