The Black Challenge defeated Liberia 1-0 in a grueling friendly match at the La McDan Park on Wednesday evening, as both teams continued with preparations for the upcoming World Cup.
Yussif Yahaya came off the bench to grab the only goal of the game with a beautiful finish to give the Black Challenge a hard-fought win.
The first half of the game saw both teams cancel each other out in key areas. The Lone Star of Liberia showed physicality and defensive solidity while the Ghanaians showed attacking intent and flair as both teams failed to find the back of the net in the opening 25 minutes.
Ghana found the breakthrough with just under ten minutes of normal time to play when substitute forward Yahaya Yussif raced through the Liberian defense to slot home a beautiful goal.
Speaking after the game, the head coach for the Black Challenge, Stephen Richard Obeng, lauded his players for the great performance.
“The boys have done a great job. They did exactly what I asked them to do. We tried not to concede a goal in the first half. We came into the second with a different strategy, and thankfully we got a goal.”
The first lesson to be learnt is to be more physical. The Liberians came in with a lot of strength we didn’t expect. We’ve learnt a lot today, and we hope we can use our subsequent friendly games to correct them”, the coach added.
The game provided both teams with the right opportunity to test their strength and highlight their weaknesses as preparations continue for the 2026 World Amputee World Cup in Mexico.
The Black Challenge has been drawn in group D alongside Iraq, Colombia, and Angola, while the Lone Star of Liberia will face hosts Mexico, Italy, and Algeria in group A.
The 2026 WAFF World Cup is set to begin on the 13th of November and run to the 22nd of November, as 24 teams battle it out for the continental prize.
