The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
The suspect, identified as Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, was reportedly a close friend of the deceased and is accused of leaking Suale’s photographs to a prominent politician before his assassination.
Suale, a journalist with Tiger Eye Private Investigations, was shot dead near his family home in Madina on January 16, 2019, after collaborating with the BBC on an investigative exposé. The suspect, a former Tiger Eye employee, was dismissed from the organization before Suale’s death.
Following the murder, Amakye allegedly fled Ghana, disguising himself to evade capture after police linked him to the case. The FBI, assisting with the investigation, retrieved key phone records revealing conversations between the suspect and the deceased in the days leading up to the murder. Suale’s mobile phones were also sent to the U.S. for forensic analysis.
Police apprehended Amakye last week at a hair salon in Amasaman-Adease after he secretly returned to Ghana. However, his arrest has sparked controversy within the police service, as a senior officer is reportedly attempting to interfere with the case, advocating for his release on police inquiry bail instead of prosecution.
Suale was murdered after his investigative team at Tiger Eye PI exposed widespread corruption in African football, particularly in Ghana. His assassination drew global condemnation and calls for justice.
