An Accra High Court has discharged former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi and his co-accused after a five-year legal battle stemming from an investigative exposé by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The exposé, which initially shook Ghana’s football community, led to Nyantakyi’s resignation in 2018.
A key turning point in the case came on January 30, 2025, when the Court of Appeal reaffirmed the principle that a fair trial must be conducted within a reasonable timeframe. This ruling emboldened the High Court to discharge the accused persons, citing the prosecution’s failure to present any witnesses throughout the trial.
Despite listing five potential witnesses, the prosecution was unable to secure testimony. The final witness refused to testify unless permitted to wear a mask—an unusual request that further stalled proceedings. With no evidence presented, Her Ladyship Justice Marie-Louise Simmonds ruled that there was no basis to continue the case
