HEALTH: 29 Cholera cases reported in Winneba

Date:

Efutu residents have been given some hope amid the cholera outbreak, as authorities confirm that those affected are receiving treatment and showing signs of improvement.

Health officials have called for strict hygiene measures, such as regular handwashing and proper sanitation, to help contain the spread of the disease.

The majority of the infections have been traced to a specific area in Winneba, with children being the most vulnerable. The outbreak has resulted in two fatalities—one in October 2024 and another in early 2025—but the hospital remains confident in its ability to manage the situation. Dr. Douglas Amponsah, Acting Medical Superintendent of the Winneba Municipal Hospital, assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to control the outbreak.

An isolation centre has been established to handle the infected patients. So far, 29 cases have been confirmed out of 356 reported, with contact tracing efforts underway to identify individuals who may have been exposed to the disease.

Health officials revealed that all 29 confirmed cases have been linked to the same family in a particular locality within Effutu, raising concerns about possible environmental or sanitary factors contributing to the outbreak. Efforts are being made to trace contacts and prevent further spread. Despite the fatalities, most of the infected children are responding to treatment, and authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to protect the public from additional infections.
