Ghana’s Football Association (GFA) is cracking down on the pitch invader who disrupted the Black Stars’ World Cup qualifier against Chad, seeking to hold him financially accountable for an anticipated FIFA fine.
The GFA’s Safety and Security Committee has charged the offender with a misdemeanor, pushing for him to bear the cost of the sanction, which could start at $10,000. FIFA has strict regulations against pitch invasions, and Ghana is at risk of yet another hefty fine.
During the match at Accra Sports Stadium, an overzealous fan stormed the pitch, sprinting toward Antoine Semenyo in admiration of his goal-scoring performance. Security personnel quickly intervened, escorting him off the field, but the incident, broadcast live to millions, left a stain on Ghanaian football’s reputation.
The culprit was arrested and detained at the Ministries Police Station.
“This keeps happening, and it’s unacceptable. We are determined to set an example—he must share in the financial burden of Ghana’s likely fine,” the source stated.
This marks the fifth pitch invasion in five years at Ghanaian football events, sparking concerns over lax security. Reports suggest that some security officers were momentarily distracted by the game, allowing the breach to happen.
With the GFA determined to deter future incidents, the accused invader may be forced to contribute a significant portion of any imposed FIFA fine, ensuring such disruptions don’t become a recurring issue.
