The Los Angeles Galaxy clinched their sixth Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup courtesy of a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
Early goals from Ghanaian international, Joseph Paintsil, and Serbian striker Dejan Joveljić gave LA Galaxy a much-deserved lead following a blistering start to stun their opponents.
Sean Nealis pulled one back for NY Red Bulls with a decent volley from Emile Forsberg’s corner-kick midway through the first half.
Painstil and his LA Galaxy teammates resisted all attempts by the New Yorkers to restore parity and send the game into extra time to win the MLS Cup.
The triumph ends a ten-year trophy drought for the LA Galaxy. For the victors’ manager, Greg Vanney, it is his second championship title.
He commended his team for etching their names into the history books of American soccer.
“These guys did it and they cemented their legacy [at] a club with incredible history and legacy and I’m proud of them. [This] will bond them together as a group forever,” he said after the match.
