The head coach of the Black Stars of Ghana, Otto Addo, has named his number one goalkeeper for the team ahead of the next matches.
Since the now-out-of-favor, Richard Ofori made his debut for the Black Stars while at Wa All Stars, formerly in the Ghana Premier League, in 2017; no local goalkeeper had kept post for the team until Hearts of Oak’s Benjamin Asare.
Otto Addo expressed how impressed he has been by the Hearts captain’s performance, especially during the training sessions leading to the game against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium.
“For the moment he’s number one. We decided for him. He did well in training. Like I said, it’s not like he’s here; the others are there. So we have a good situation where the goalkeepers are pushing each other,” the former Dortmund tactician said to the press after Ghana’s win over Madagascar.
“Benjamin deserves it. He’s done well in the league, but also the training we have had and I’m happy for him,” he added while praising the substitute goalkeepers Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joseph Jojo Wollacott.
Asare, who already has a record of 12 clean sheets in 19 games for Hearts, kept his second clean sheet in his second cap for the Black Stars on Monday, March 24, when Ghana defeated 3-0 Madagascar in Morocco to put themselves in a good chance of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
